May Lawn Tips

Soil3 Compost Topdressing as a Fertilizer Application

The picture speaks a thousand words. Only two weeks ago this homeowner topdressed with our Soil3 organic compost for his first fertilizer application - the topdressed area is already dark green thanks to Nature's Nutrients inherent in Soil3. A border around the lawn was kept untreated because that grass will be removed and a fence installed and shrubs planted; the untreated area is light green because it didn't receive any Soil3 (so no nutrients). The difference is night and day!
Β
  • Time to Aerate and Compost-Topdress: May-July are the months to aerate and compost-topdress your warm season lawn (Bermuda, Centipede, Zoysia, St. Augustine) with Soil3.
  • It is the wrong time to compost-topdress Tall Fescue; it's topdressed in the fall.
  • Organic Lawn Care: Soil3 is OMRI Listed certified organic compost and is safe for your family, pets, and the environment.
  • Fertilizer: Topdressing with Soil3 counts as 1 fertilizer application for the year.
  • Disease Suppression: Studies show that because compost introduces beneficial microorganisms into the soil, topdressing with compost reduces disease outbreaks in lawns.
  • Boost the Soil for a Healthy Lawn: Aeration boosts soil quality by allowing oxygen, water, and compost to permeate the root zone. Soil3 compost boosts soil by adding organic matter to improve soil structure and increase water retention.
  • For best results aerate with a core aerator at the same time you topdress with Soil3 compost.

Spring & Summer Weed Control

  • It's too late to apply pre-emergent herbicides to stop spring and summer weeds from germinating. The weed seeds have already germinated, even if you can't see them. Weed and Feed products at this time are a waste of money.
  • Spring and Summer are the seasons when post-emergent weed control comes into play. Call us for products!
  • Keep your lawn mowed to prevent weeds from flowering, forming seeds, and germinating all over again. Regular mowing will help to stop the weed cycle.
  • The Truth: Hand weeding is a viable option. It's safe/organic, it's decent exercise, and it's meditative "alone time" (nobody will interrupt you while you're weeding - they want you to get it done!). Hand weeding is also a way to employ the children in your family and neighborhood who want some pocket change.
  • Mulch is amazing at controlling weeds in flower/shrub beds. Call us to order mulch and pine straw.

More Lawn Care Tips

  • It's time for your first application of fertilizer on your warm season lawn. If you don't aerate and compost-topdress, then use one of our fertilizer blends.
  • Stop fertilizing your Tall Fescue lawn for the summer; resume again in the fall. We'll let you know when.
  • Topdressing of turf also refers to a thick layer (no more than 1/2 of the blade height) of sand or topsoil intended to improve the surface texture of the land under the turf - to even out bumps and depressions. The goal of topdressing like that is to create a smooth playing surface, often for sports field and golf courses, and is often necessary to smooth newly established home and commercials lawns. Topdressing for evening out turf requires a thicker layer of topdressing material (compared with compost-topdressing as a fertilizer application). Stay tuned for more details as we develop a product especially for this purpose!

Drivable Grass

Consider Drivable Grass permeable pavers coupled with Zenith Zoysia as an alternative to a paved driveway or parking lot. The Drivable Grass system (pavers + sod) allows water to permeate the soil while supporting a strong root system in the grass. These pavers also open new opportunities for design ideas.
