Marietta Flash Mob Benefits Fight Against Hunger

Nearly 500 turn out to show off their dance moves to benefit MUST Ministries.

Nearly 500 people turned out Saturday to participate in a "flash mob" just after 6 p.m., dancing to Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" in Glover Park on Marietta Square. A flash mob is where a large group assembles in a public place, performs or dances for a brief time and then disperses. It is usually very spontaneous.

Nikki Clotfelter of Marietta, organizer of this planned flash mob, chose to benefit because of their recent plea for food to fill their dwindling pantries. Before dancing, participants dropped food in barrels that will be given to MUST Ministries in Marietta, Smyrna and Canton.

Nearly 100 people attended a rehearsal last week at First Presbyterian Church in Marietta, and Clotfelter also posted the dance movements on YouTube and Facebook.Β  It worked like a charm.

"This was on my bucket list to do," said 14-year-old Mandy Losito, who came from Woodstock with her friends to participate in the mob. She said she has volunteered at MUST Ministries in the past and believes in the mission of the non-profit organization.

Gina Ann Riggs of Woodstock said she is originally from Marietta and heard Clotfelter was organizing a flash mob. "I've always wanted to do one and I heard she was doing it for a great cause," said Riggs, who danced alongside Clotfelter during the mob scene.

The dance lasted about 3 minutes and included all ages, from toddlers to teens to senior adults.Β  The event drew hundreds to the Square just to watch it happen.
