Pet Adoption, Benefit Concert; Tree Planting

For those looking to escape the holiday craze that takes over this time of year, here are some fun events happening in Marietta this weekend.

1. The Marietta-based Homeless Pets Foundation is hosting a fundraiser and benefit concert on Friday from noon to 4 p.m. at Finer Consignments at 1465 Roswell Road at Powers Ferry Road in the New London Square shopping center.

The event will raise funds for a vehicle to transport disabled pets. There will be live music, free food, silent auctions of jewelry and accessories, and cats and dogs for adoption. The adoption fee is $195 for a dog and $100 for a cat.

The Homeless Pets Foundation takes in injured, neglected, abused and "last chance" (scheduled for euthanasia) animals. These dogs and cats are brought to Town & Country Vet Clinic where they receive any medical care they may need.

2. Volunteers of all ages are invited to help Marietta Tree Keepers plant trees at on Saturday. Volunteers should arrive at 8:30 a.m. to enjoy donuts and drinks before digging in to work. All ages are welcome to this family-friendly event and are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. Tools will be provided although volunteers are welcome to bring their favorite outdoor gloves and tools if they like.

3. Atlanta Lyric Theatre presents The Sound of Music through Dec. 18 at . The Sound of Music tells the story of Captain von Trapp, his seven musically gifted children and their governess Maria Rainer as they use their love and faith to survive and escape the Nazi occupation of Austria.

Leading the cast are Wendy Melkonian as Maria, Jeff McKerley as Captain von Trapp and Mary Welch Rogers as the Mother Abbess. The production is directed by Brandt Blocker and choreographed by Claci Miller.

Schedule: Dec. 8 through 11: Thurs., Fri. and Sat. at 8 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m.

This is a fine example of freedom being too much to handle for some folks. The idiots who gave theRead More kid the gun should be jailed. Its obvious that a 5 year old should neither posses, nor handle a firearm period. Having said that I am a full supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA. However we cannot measure the validity of the right to bear arms by using these idiot parents as a case study.
