Chick-fil-A opened its first free standing store in 1986. The restaurants are closed on Sundays because founder Truett Cathy was worn out the first week after opening his first store in 1967. Later, Cathy said he was devoted to God and would honor him being closed Sunday. The two pickles that come with each sandwich are also a throwback to the original store because that was the only condiment Cathy had at the time. Chick-fil-A has kept with the tradition since.
