The Detention Division of the Cobb County Sheriff's Office manages the county's jail, the Work Deployment Facility and the Records and Information Unit. The jail spreads out over 11 acres and includes Building A, the site's original jail, which was constructed in 1987 for $13.5 million; Building B, an expansion added in 1997 that cost $39.2 million; and C Tower, a $110 million project finished in 2010. The entire complex can house 3,077 inmates, all of whom are awaiting trial or sentencing. The Work Deployment Facility can house up to 384 inmates assigned to supervised county work crews and work release programs. These are inmates who have been sentenced to serve their time within the county. The maximum sentence allowed for this institution is 24 months, although the average time served is between six and 12 months. The Records and Information Unit maintains arrest and identification records, fingerprints, photographs and court documents for any person that has served a sentence in a Cobb detention program. Col. Milton Beck serves as division commander.
