Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal visited the Lockheed Martin site in Marietta on Thursday. During his visit, Gov. Deal visited the site’s production lines to meet with employees and toured a C-130J on the flight line. The governor also received status updates for the site’s current programs, including the C-130J Super Hercules, C-5 Super Galaxy, P-3 Orion, F-22 Raptor and the center wing assembly for the F-35 Lightning II. The aerospace industry and Georgia have strong ties, with more than 500 aerospace companies calling the state home. In 2010, Georgia’s aerospace exports topped $4.3 billion, ranking the state as the fourth highest for such exports in the United States. Two student productions and the instructor-led coverage of the Shuler Hensley Awards are up for Southeastern awards.
Two students, a recent graduate who’s a Patch contributor and the lead instructor of Chattahoochee Technical College’s television production technology program, have been nominated for Southeastern Regional Emmy Awards for work they did through class. The television production program is based at Chattahoochee Tech’s Mountain View campus in Northeast Cobb. Program graduate Jenny Lindamood of Kennesaw, whose work for Patch includes extensive video coverage of high school football, teamed with current student Marty Johnson of Alpharetta to create Double Cross My Heart, nominated in the category of student production—non-news. Fred Schenk piloted the aircraft, known as BF-11, which departed Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base in Texas at 10:02 a.m. CDT for a 90-minute flight to Florida’s Emerald Coast. The perpetrators were wearing masks and dark clothing with vests displaying “POLICE” on the back. One of the men was armed with a shotgun.
Cobb County Police are investigating an attempted home invasion, which occurred at a residence on Chisholm Trail Wednesday. A male resident heard the perpetrators banging at the back door and telling him to let them in because they were the police. The resident refused, and the perpetrators attempted to gain entry into the house by forcing the locked door open. The man gathered his family into another room and immediately called 9-1-1. The perpetrators fled in an unknown direction without gaining entry. They were described as three black men, about 6-foot with a thin build. Patrons, businesses and friends showed their support for the historic Strand Theatre by making donations and coming out to watch live performances at the first call-a-thon.
After 12 hours of manning phones and live performances from locals, the Earl Smith Strand Theatre raised $65,500 during its First Annual Strand Call-a-thon on Wednesday. That is $15,500 over its goal of $50,000. "The Strand has become a location for the entire community to get together," Earl Reece, executive director, said. An example would be the Great Locomotive Chase during which the Strand had about 500 people from every area of the community represented including the arts, lawyers, civic groups and more. "It's becoming a place where rather than just a community getting together it's like a family reunion," Reece said. "So many people support and know each other in Marietta. It's wonderful."
