Chatt Tech Students Earn Emmy Bids

Two student productions and the instructor-led coverage of the Shuler Hensley Awards are up for Southeastern awards.

Two students, a recent graduate who’s a Patch contributor and the lead instructor of Chattahoochee Technical College’s television production technology program, have been nominated for Southeastern Regional Emmy Awards for work they did through class. The television production program is based at Chattahoochee Tech’s Mountain View campus in Northeast Cobb. Program graduate Jenny Lindamood of Kennesaw, whose work for Patch includes extensive video coverage of high school football, teamed with current student Marty Johnson of Alpharetta to create Double Cross My Heart, nominated in the category of student production—non-news. MCS Board Names Dayton Hibbs Associate Superintendent

As Associate Superintendent Hibbs will assist with all facets of Marietta school district management and supervise curriculum and instruction, operations, technology and assessment.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta has named Dayton Hibbs, the current Assistant Superintendent for Operations, Technology and Assessment, as the new Associate Superintendent for Marietta City Schools. Hibbs will serve on the Superintendent’s Cabinet and will officially assume the post June 1. “Dayton brings eight years direct administrative experience at the elementary, middle and high school level, as well as expertise in the areas of start-up Charter School administration, educational technology and curriculum development,” said Emily Lembeck, MCS Superintendent, in a press release. “As Associate Superintendent he will assist with all facets of school district management, and supervise curriculum and instruction, operations…

Three Marietta educators are among the 150 teachers named SMART Exemplary Educators in North America.

Three Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) educators, Stormi Johnson, third-grade teacher; Susie Throop, fourth-grade teacher; and Dacia Riles, third-grade teacher, were named SMART Exemplary Educators, and are among only 150 teachers selected for the honor in North America each year.   The North American SMART Exemplary Educator program is open to K–12 teachers, technology coordinators and administrators in the United States and Canada who are committed to developing engaging content and sharing their expertise with other educators. Marietta Recognizes Governor’s Honors Program Participants

Two Marietta High School students were chosen to participate in the 2012 Georgia Governor's Honors program in German and communicative arts.

Mayor Steve Tumlin and Marietta High School principal Leigh Colburn honored MHS sophomore Jackson Mitchell and junior Jessica Luegering for being chosen to participate in the 2012 Georgia Governor’s Honors Program. “We have 2,000 wonderful students and are very proud that U.S. News and World Report ranked Marietta High School in the top seven percent in the country, and here are two wonderful reasons why,” Colburn said. “The Governor’s Honors Program is an extremely selective process where they look at students all over the state of Georgia, and take them down to South Georgia and immerse them in lots of academic study,” she said. “Jessica and Jackson are going to represent our city there this summer.” Luegering was nominated in …

Marietta Seventh Grader to Represent Georgia in National Geographic Bee

Sahr Singh of Marietta will compete against 54 fourth through eighth graders for the 2012 Bee crown and three scholarships worth $50,000. The 54 finalists beat millions of students to earn a place in the national contest.

Sahr Singh, a seventh grader from Marietta, is among 54 of the nation’s brightest young geography brainiacs that will gather in Washington, D.C., from May 22 to 24 to take part in the 24th annual National Geographic Bee. The fourth- through eighth-graders, ranging in age from 10 to 14, will be competing for the 2012 Bee crown and three scholarships worth $50,000.  The National Geographic Bee champion will win the top prize of a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. Second- and third-place finishers will be awarded college scholarships of $15,000 and $10,000. Marietta High School Ranked 28th in Georgia

This is the third year U.S. News has named Marietta High School to the list of best high schools in the nation.

U.S. News & World Report named Marietta High School to its 2012 annual list of the best high schools. Of the 21,776 public high schools examined by U.S. News, the magazine named MHS a silver medal winner. Marietta High School is ranked 1,611 nationally and 28th in Georgia out of 77 Georgia schools ranked. “This is the third year U.S. News has named Marietta High School to the list of best high schools in the nation. Atlanta Hawks Basketball Camp Coming to Marietta

The camp is for boys and girls ages seven to 16.

The Atlanta Hawks Summer Basketball Camp will make a stop at Fair Oaks Recreation Center, May 28 to June 1, and Sprayberry High School, June 4 to June 8. The camps are open to boys and girls ages 7-16, and, according to the Hawks' release, "offer a high-energy opportunity for young players and fans to improve their skills, play the game, meet friends and have fun." Features of the camps include Atlanta Hawks guests and trainers, a 2012-13 regular season Hawks game ticket and Hawks gear, the organization said. The cost for each camp is $200.
