Republican Phil Gingrey represents Georgia's 11th District in the House of Representatives. Gingrey joined the HouseMore in 2003 and represents portions of Cobb, Cherokee and Gordon counties as well as all of Bartow, Chattooga, Floyd, Haralson, Paulding and Polk counties. He currently serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce and several subcommittees. Gingrey, a native of Augusta, worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist in Marietta before serving on the Marietta City Board of Education, the Georgia Senate and eventually the U.S. House. He and his wife, Billie, have four children and 10 grandchildren and attend St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marietta.

Marietta City Schools educates about 8,000 students with the City of Marietta in eight elementary schools, a sixth-gradeMore academy, a middle schools and a high school. The school system and its schools have earned numerous awards and honors. Four schools have earned designation as a Georgia School of Excellence with one earning one as a National School of Excellence. The system is also an International Baccalaureate World School district, one of few offering the challenging curriculum from kindergarten through high school. The school district is one of Cobb County's largest employers with about 1,200 faculty, staff and other personnel. A seven-member Board of Education, elected by ward every four years, approve policy and direction of the school district. For day-to-day operations, the board appoints a school superintendent.

Smitha Middle School educates more than 900 students from sixth through eighth grade. Built in 1993, the school expandedMore in 2006 to accommodate growth in the county. Smitha Middle School is named in honor of William Oliver Smitha, a lifelong educator, former principal of several Cobb schools and former member of the Cobb County Board of Education. Sharon Tucker serves as principal.
