Marietta's Jennings an Elite 11 QB

The high school junior earned a spot at the national finals by winning MVP honors at Friday's regional football camp.

Marietta High quarterback Anthony Jennings was named MVP of Friday's Atlanta regional Elite 11 quarterback camp, ESPN HS reported. The talent experts at the camp in Buford, including former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer, rated the junior Blue Devil's performance better than nearly 100 other quarterbacks, mostly in the Class of 2013. That means Jennings gets a spot in the national finals in July in California while other acclaimed local quarterbacks, such as Lassiter's Eddie Printz, do not. After playing through a knee injury most of last football season and all basketball season, the Marietta star appears healthy and is impressing the experts, ESPN says. ESPN had Jennings rated as the 13th-best dual-threat quarterback in next year's senior …

Readers' Choice Winner: Free-Flite Bicycles

This East Cobb and Northeast Cobb bicycle retailer easily broke away from the sporting goods peloton.

This week's Readers' Choice winner in the sporting goods category started pedaling early and never looked back.  Free-Flite Bicycles of East Cobb was the easy winner, according to readers in East Cobb, Northeast Cobb and Marietta, garnering 14 votes.  No other sporting goods establishment had more than two votes.  While the sporting goods industry has changed in recent years -- the superstore Sports Authority chain left the area years ago -- the devotion to a locally-owned hub for cycling gear and service remains strong.  Free-Flite, located at 4177 Roswell Road, has been in business since 1978, and also has locations at 2949 Canton Road in Northeast Cobb and 1437 Riverstone Parkway in Canton. Loyal customers know it's much more than a …

After several shots at the NFL, defensive back Thad Turner is restarting his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Marietta High alumnus Thad Turner signed with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday. The signing was an early birthday present for the Marietta native and 2005 Marietta High grad, who turns 25 on April 30. He was one of four players Hamilton added Thursday, including another Atlanta-area player, North Atlanta High grad Justin Boddie. Turner is a defensive back who signed with the Indianapolis Colts two years ago after completing his college career at Ohio University. Cut by the Colts in the 2010 preseason, he spent the year on the New England Patriots’ practice squad. The Patriots cut him last August, and he spent the preseason with the Arizona Cardinals but was released Sept. 2. Bleacher Report had an entertaining…

CTC Falls to Albany Tech in GCAA First Round

The Golden Eagles finish the season at 19-12 overall, improving on the team’s 17-14 record last year, its first as an NJCAA member.

Chattahoochee Tech’s men’s basketball team fell in the final seconds of the first round of the GCAA tournament, losing 57-56 to Albany Tech on the road at nearby Darton College. The Golden Eagles, who took a 56-53 lead after an Asauhn Dixon-Tatum put-back dunk with 30 seconds remaining, lost the lead when ATC hit a 3-pointer to tie with 12 seconds to play. A free throw by Jamorris Gaines of Albany Tech with 1.7 seconds gave the Titans the one-point advantage, and a long CTC inbounds pass was intercepted to end the game. Chatt Tech, the No. 5 seed, got 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocks from the 6-foot-11 sophomore Dixon-Tatum, who shot 7-for-8 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in his final game as a …
