A North Paulding brother duo earned top honors in another field event Thursday.
Patrick Fleming of Pope High School and Tray Oates of Allatoona High School repeated as state champions in the 1,600-meter run and the pole vault, respectively, as the Georgia High School Association boys state track and field meet got underway Thursday in Jefferson. Two other athletes from Cobb schools -- Jaylan Reid of Hillgrove High School (shot put) and Joey Connors of Harrison High School (discus) -- also won state crowns. While Fleming repeated as 1,600 champion in the second-largest classification -- now Class AAAAA -- Oates retained his crown by prevailing over a larger group of contenders. Allatoona, which competed in Class AAA last year, moved up to what is now Class AAAAA. Fleming clocked in with a time of 4:15.58, while Oates' …
College football programs are not allowed to place website addresses or social media messages on the field due to rules that were recently amended by the NCAA. Tell us what you think of the athletic association’s decision.
#GoDawgs or #GoJackets? Whichever your preference, you won’t see either on an NCAA football field this fall. The NCAA’s recent “Bulletin on Field Markings, Uniforms, etc.” expressly prohibits “social media designations such as URL’s and hashtags” (Hashtags are words or phrases that are preceded by the # symbol that can be used online to group messages together or to rally support for a common cause, such as for a favorite team.). The rule means that while you may see your fellow fans using Twitter and other social media platforms while at the game, you won’t see “#SicemDawgs” between the hedges at Sanford Stadium or “#GaTech” on Historic Grant Field in Bobby Dodd Stadium. Speaking of UGA, another Southeastern Conference school, Mississippi…

Three games in Class AAAAAA will be in Cobb, which boasts three teams in the Top 10. One of the biggest surprises of the season is No. 1 McEachern, which plays host to Tift County. The Indians (22-4) have been thriving under first-year coach Dan Torrenti, a former McEachern player. Also playing at home is No. 4 Walton (19-7), which will be facing South Gwinnett, and No. 6 Marietta (19-7), which is playing host to Camden County. West Cobb's other high schools will be on the road as Harrison travels to Colquitt County …

The Comets scored a goal with two minutes to play to register the upset. The Trojans, who were ranked third in a national high school poll, ended their season with a 16-1-0 record. Not far away in East Cobb, unranked Walton fell behind 2-0 to Central Gwinnett and could not recover, also losing by a 2-1 score. The Campbell boys had a far better outcome, rolling to an easy 5-2 win at home against Camden County. As the MDJ reports, the Spartans scored four goals in their first 10 …

Former Atlanta Hawks player Jason Collins, most recently with the Washington Wizards, recently came out as gay. Tell us what impact, if any, you think his announcement will have.
"I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay," says Jason Collins in a story set to be published in the May 6 issue of Sports Illustrated. The pro basketball veteran has been a member of six teams in 12 seasons in the league, including three in Atlanta—he last donned a Hawks jersey during the 2011-2012 season. But many are likely to deem his coming out as something bigger than his on-the-court career, as he has become the first male U.S. athlete in a major professional sport to declare that he is gay. "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation,” Collins told Sports Illustrated. Collins’ announcement was lauded by several of his …

"Runners, walkers, people who just want to feel the love, but don't want to run or walk, are all welcome," said Karen Kaye, BGPC's communications director, told Patch. The moment of silence run was going to be a small gathering of runners at the Midtown store as a way to bring Atlanta's running community together in light of the recent …

The IOC's decision to remove one of its oldest sports sent shock waves throughout the wrestling world. Patch wants to know what you think.
The recent decision by the International Olympic Committee to drop wrestling from the 2020 Summer Games stunned and disappointed wrestling coaches across metro Atlanta. The IOC’s decision really hit home with Patrick Ryan during the recent Georgia wrestling championship tournament in Macon. Ryan, Lithonia High School’s wrestling coach, said his all-time best wrestler told him, “I don’t even want to wrestle anymore.” “Here is my all-time greatest wrestler, telling me he wants to quit,” Ryan said, “and I had to convince him to keep going.” In a secret vote, the International Olympic Committee’s executive board decided to eliminate wrestling from the Olympics. The committee agreed to pare down the 26 sports it features to 25 so that a new …
