In the new digital age, perspective adoptive parents are turning to the Internet, including Craigslist, to look for a baby.
ABC News did a special on adoption recently showing just how different it is in the digital age. In the special, it showed a reunion between an adopted child and his birth mother. The adopted mother and birth mother had met online – in an ad on Craigslist. In this particular case, it was a successful union between the two parties. The birth mother was able to keep up with her child through Facebook and now that she is in a better place in life, she was able to meet up with him again in real life. The same couple, however, had a negative situation, also with Craigslist, when looking for a second child. But in that case too they were able to resolve the issue on the Internet. Good Mews Animal Foundation, a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter, received a $5,000 grant from the Doris Day Animal Foundation, founded by actress and animal welfare advocate Doris Day, to support adoptions of senior cats by senior citizens. John “Bud” Lovell, 85, of Atlanta, benefited from the Doris Day grant when he adopted 7-year-old Priscilla from the Golden Companions program. Lovell spent several hours meeting the many feline residents of Good Mews, and eventually was drawn to Priscilla’s demure personality and striking green eyes. “Priscilla has brought me such joy,” said Lovell in a press release. “Even when she’s just sitting in the window watching the birds, she brings me companionship. 1. The Humane Society of Cobb County will celebrate and promote a "dog run" in Lewis Park and will also have information on the shelter, services for the community and animal welfare issues. Dog training demonstrations will be provided by K-9 Coach, named the Outstanding Small Business of 2011 by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. The event runs Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. 2. The Boxerstock 2011 music festival brings Cobb County a day of fun for the whole family, including four-legged members. Oh sure, pawn off the senior cats onto the very part of the population that can ill afford the medical vet bills for senior cats, those on fixed incomes. I have seen this done before and it was a terrible idea with cats being neglected, returned for lack of funds when sick. Let seniors foster cats with rescues footing all the bills is a much better idea.   more ›
