In recent years, Georgia has used the holiday season to reinforce the state’s zero tolerance policy for impaired driving. If you’re over the limit, you’re under arrest. It’s that simple. However, the end of 2012 has brought a new sense of urgency for Georgia besides making New Year’s resolutions. That’s because for the first time in 6 years, Georgia is on track to experience an increase in traffic fatalities, according to Marietta Police. If fatalities maintain their current rate, the state will surpass last year’s total of 1,226 deaths on our roadways. That’s why the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is adding a special message to its normal enforcement campaign this time of year, Marietta Police said in a press release. In …

The Marietta Police Department is launching the "Cop Cab" campaign, which visually combines the efforts of DUI education and the inevitable end result of DUI enforcement.
The Marietta Police Department has launched a new campaign called “Cop Cab” to curb drinking and driving. The Cop Cab campaign visually combines the efforts of DUI education and the inevitable end result of DUI enforcement. "It’s an educational tool we are using to try to prevent drinking and driving," Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin said. "If we talk in a seminar, we reach a small group of people in the scheme of things, but with the Cop Cab, we can put it out in high profile areas like in the Square. And it's a very catchy paint job that draws people in." The idea behind Cop Cab is not a new concept; however it appears to be the first of its kind in the metro Atlanta area. Cop Cab will be used all over the city as a strong visual …

Alcohol is no longer the key contributing factor while driving under the influence (DUI). With the dramatic rise in the abuse of prescription medications, bath salts and spice marijuana, alcohol is now only a contributing factor for most DUI’s, according to Marietta Police Public Information Officer David Baldwin. According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, 75 percent of persons who abuse alcohol also abuse illicit drugs. The metro Atlanta area has seen a dramatic increase of poly drug driving, which is the combination of alcohol and illicit drugs, Baldwin said in a press release.
