Last Chance: Summer's Must-Reads

Sure, school is back in session, but the kids don't have to be the only ones hitting the books this month.

Although Labor Day marks the last hurrah for white pants, barbeques and kids up late on a Sunday night, it is not the end of the season. People, until the clock strikes midnight on Sept. 21, it's still summer. And that means there's just enough time to squeeze in another good book atop your favorite lounge chair. Chatt Tech Opens Doors to a New School Year

More than 12,400 students were registered for classes on the first day—in line with last year’s enrollment numbers. The college’s Marietta and North Metro campuses remain the top two options for students.

A new semester and school year started Friday at Chattahoochee Technical College with approximately 3,900 new students on the rolls. Georgia’s largest technical college began classes on August 17 at its eight campuses that span six counties in Northwest Georgia. “This is always an exciting time of year,” said Chattahoochee Technical College President Ron Newcomb. “We have new programs beginning and new students joining us for the first time. Just in time for the kickoff of a fresh school year at Cobb County Schools, the app that turns a parent’s iPhone or iPad into a mobile payment system for their child’s school meals has hit the Apple App Store. The free app MyPaymentsPlus was designed to help busy parents and guardians make on-the-go meal payments with just a few keystrokes. The app also enables parents to see what foods their children choose in the cafeteria, a feature that can be helpful for parents seeking to instill healthy eating habits. Safety Tips, Laws for Going Back to School

The Marietta Police Department offers advice on getting to work and school on time and reviews bus laws.

Thursday, Aug. 9 is the start of the up-coming school year for Marietta City Schools.  Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will increase, especially in subdivisions and apartment complexes. Large numbers of parents and children will be congregating on street corners. Marietta Police are advising residents to slowdown and pay careful attention in these areas and watch for buses and as they stop to load and unload their passengers.  Allow for extra time to get to work or to drop kids off at school. Reduced speed limits in school zones will be active and indicated by flashing yellow lights.  As a reminder, state law requires that traffic in both directions stop for school buses loading and unloading their passengers. Parents of rising Cobb County kindergartners are invited on a trial run of their child’s bus route Friday, Aug. 10. “The District offers this opportunity to help families introduce Cobb's youngest students to the school bus and make our first day on Monday, Aug. 13 run more smoothly,” a Cobb County schools representative said in a press release. The district asks that only kindergarteners and their parents participate in the trial run because of space limitations. Parents are asked to arrive at their child’s bus stop five minutes before pickup. Bus drivers will complete the entire route to and from school before dropping passengers off at their stops. Parents can find their child’s bus route, bus stop and pickup time using the Cobb County …

Common Core Curriculum Comes to Cobb County

The state-by-state initiative is designed to create an improved national standard of education, creating students that can compete in the global marketplace.

As the new school year draws near, students and parents may be surprised to discover that a new curriculum has been implemented in Georgia for the 2012-13 school year. The Common Core State Standards Initiative, commonly called Common Core, has been adopted in 46 states, without the input or direction of the Federal Government. These new sets of standards are designed to create students who are able to think critically, compete and excel in the global job market, and become better citizens. Georgia adopted the new standards in July, 2010. Teachers have been training on the new standards and how to teach them to their students since May, 2011. Operation Homefront, Dollar Tree Help local Guardsmen

More than 50 Soldiers received pens, pencils, calculators, paper and folders for their children who are returning to schools across North Georgia.

Shelly Williams, of the Joint Forces Headquarters Family Support Group welcomed Soldiers and Airmen of the Georgia Guard to Operation Homefront's back to school event at Clay National Guard Center in Marietta last week.   The event featured free back to school supplies donated by the Dollar Tree.  More than 50 Soldiers received pens, pencils, calculators, paper and folders for their children who are returning to schools across North Georgia.
