City Manager Bill Bruton honored retirees, employees who have served Marietta for a combined total of 1,801 years and employees of the year at a City Hall ceremony on Dec. 7. Twenty-one employees who have served the city for a combined total of 516 years and five months retired in 2012. City Leaders Appoint Citizens to Study Issues

The committee will recommend ideas for quiet railroad crossings, treescapes, trash management, parking and traffic around Marietta Square.

Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin and City Council appointed a committee to recommend ideas for possibly creating one or more quiet railroad crossings in Marietta, "treescapes," trash management and improvement to replace dumpsters downtown, traffic and parking enhancements around the Square and other improvements near the Square. The committee, which will serve for 12 months, held their first meeting Oct. 1 and elected a chairman, vice chairman and secretary and scheduled their upcoming meetings. The city will provide the necessary staff to help the committee with the issues they work on, city manager Bill Bruton said.

After being unbeaten during the season and winning the four-game regional finals, they defeated the Dacula Champions by a score of 2-1 in the Championship Game played in Fayetteville, Georgia. During the 2011-2012 Seasons Freedom had a combined record of 24-0-1, were unbeaten in 25 straight games and un-scored on for 24 straight until the Final. Freedom is Coached by Bill Bruton and Bob Burke. Team Manager is Lauri Bruton. Mother and Son Statue Leads Visitors into Confederate Cemetery

Mayor Steve Tumlin, Betty Hunter and seven-year-old Henry Sinclair, Councilman Johnny Sinclair’s nephew who modeled for the statue, unveiled the creation on Sunday.

The poignant image of a mother and her son leaving the Marietta Confederate Cemetery will exist for generations to come. A bronze statue was unveiled Sunday at the wagon road entry from Brown Park into the Marietta Confederate Cemetery. Mayor Steve Tumlin, former Councilwoman Betty Hunter and seven-year-old Henry Sinclair, Councilman Johnny Sinclair’s nephew who modeled for the statue, unveiled the creation. The statue was placed leading into the cemetery to give people a visual as they are thinking about the more than 3,000 soldiers buried there, City Manager Bill Bruton said. Community leaders, descendants of members of Marietta’s Great Locomotive Chase, historians and train and history enthusiasts gathered at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre Thursday night to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War event. The night was full of laughter, memories and most of all history. "It's a war story; it's an adventure story; and it's a railroad story," Russell Bonds, of Marietta and author of the award-winning novel Stealing the General, said. New Cinema to Complete Marietta Entertainment Experience

The new NCG Cinema Complex is one of many major developments to take place in the Powder Springs Street redevelopment corridor in Marietta.

Revitalization of the Powder Springs Street corridor continues with the announcement of Marietta's newest movie theater, which will include stadium seating, 3D and surround sound technology. Construction on the multi-million dollar 10-screen Neighborhood Cinema Group (NCG) theater at 1050 Powder Springs St. will begin in January 2012, according to a City of Marietta press release. During the renovation, 50 contractors will be employed, and NCG Cinemas expects to create 40 to 50 regular part-time jobs, as well as several full-time management positions.
