A Cartersville man died Tuesday night when his pickup truck crashed into a vacant building near a busy intersection in East Marietta. Marietta Police identified the victim as James Franklin Griffin, 68. According to The Marietta Daily Journal, Griffin suffered a heart attack as he was waiting at a traffic signal at Roswell Road and Powers Ferry Road around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the victim's late-model red Chevrolet Silverado truck rolled through the intersection and through the front walls of the empty building, located at 1323 Roswell Road. A pedestrian was struck by a 2000 Toyota Corolla while she was attempting to cross South Cobb Drive near Appleton Drive on Sunday, according to Cobb Police. The pedestrian, Jennie Coston of Marietta, did not cross the roadway in the provided crosswalk, Police said. The driver of the 2000 Toyota Corolla has been identified as 20-year-old Katie Trivette of Lawrenceville. Coston, 55, was transported by ground to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in critical condition. On Monday, Cobb Police were notified that Coston died as a result of the injuries she sustained in the collision. No charges are expected to be filed in this investigation. It happened again Saturday: Someone tried to cross a major Marietta road outside a crosswalk and was hit by a car. An unidentified man suffered serious injuries shortly after 6:30 p.m. when he walked across Atlanta Road south of Old Clay Street and was struck by a red 1991 Ford Mustang, Marietta police said. Ricas Cook, 29, of Marietta was driving the Mustang. The man crossing the street was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program continues to investigate, but charges are pending against the pedestrian. Police ask anyone with information about what happened to contact Officer Justin Rutland at 770-794-5364. Derrick Ferree, 24, of Marietta was killed in the accident that occurred Wednesday in Woodstock. Giovanni Aragon-Mercado, 19, crossed the center line in an SUV and struck the motorcycle driven by Ferree on Bascomb Carmel Road at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Ferree was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta where he later died from his injuries. Mercado survived with no injuries. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office arrested Mercado Thursday afternoon. "It appears Mercado fell asleep at the wheel," Baker said. The Cobb County Police Department honored more than 60 of its officers and select civilians during its annual awards and recognition ceremony on Monday at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. The awardees included Field Training Officer A.M. Singleton, who was chosen to receive the “Blue Star” Award. The recognition is for a member of the department who receives significant injuries from an attack or vehicle collision in the line of duty. Singleton was hit by a vehicle during an unrelated traffic stop in March 2011, causing extensive injuries, including a fractured knee cap, ankle and wrist. It took about a year for him to recover.
