Two Marietta teens were killed early Sunday in a crash that occurred on Sandy Plains Road at Kinjac Drive in Marietta. According to a Cobb County Police Department news release, the crash happened about 3:21 a.m. Based on preliminary information from CCPD’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, the crash saw a silver 2001 Volvo S60 going northbound on Sandy Plains Road at a high rate of speed when the driver apparently lost control. The car crossed into the southbound lanes of Sandy Plains Road and struck a large brick sign at the intersection of Kinjac Drive. Cobb authorities have released the identity of the deceased driver who was involved in the fatal crash occurred that Friday evening at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Akers Mill Road near Cumberland Mall in Vinings. Warrren Thomas of Atlanta, 59, was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Kennestone Hospital after the crash. Thomas was attempting to turn right onto Cobb Parkway from Akers Mill Road on a red light when he was struck by a maroon 1999 Mitsubishi Montero, driven by 35-year-old Viengkhong Thilakhoun of Atlanta. A man died after a Friday night crash where his Chevrolet was struck twice at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Akers Mill Road near Cumberland Mall in Vinings.
A fatal crash occurred Friday evening at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Akers Mill Road near Cumberland Mall in Vinings, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Investigators said that the driver of a gray 2009 Chevrolet Impala was attempting to turn right onto Cobb Parkway from Akers Mill Road on a red light when he was struck by a maroon 1999 Mitsubishi Montero. After it was hit, the Chevrolet continued on in an easterly direction where it was struck a second time by a gray 2012 Toyota Camry, while the Mitsubishi overturned on its roof and came to an uncontrolled rest in the southbound lanes of Cobb Parkway, said Cobb police spokesman Dana Pierce. A Tennessee woman suffered serious head injuries early Saturday morning when the car she was driving crashed into a parked tractor-trailer on an entrance ramp to Interstate 75 in Marietta. The Marietta Police Department said Brandis B. Grier, 30, of South Pittsburg, Tenn., hit the tractor-trailer as she was approaching I-75 on a northbound entrance ramp from North Marietta Parkway around 2 a.m. Saturday. Police said the driver of the truck, which was parked in the left emergency lane, was uninjured, but Grier was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Marietta Police are investigating a serious pedestrian crash that occurred on Powder Springs Street at the Chestnut Hill Road intersection Friday night. An adult male, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was crossing Powder Springs Street in the crosswalk, against the pedestrian traffic signal. He was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Powder Springs Street in the right straight lane. The driver of the vehicle, 34-year-old Nicholas Archer of Marietta, told police that he did not see the pedestrian until impact occurred. A pedestrian was hit on South Cobb Drive and later pronounced dead Sunday night, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Authorities say Jose Luis Zamarripa-Perez of Smyrna, 55, was attempting to cross South Cobb Drive near the intersection of Waldrep Circle at about 7:45 p.m. when he was struck by a black 1990 Jeep Cherokee. Preliminary investigation suggests that Zamarripa-Perez was walking westbound and not at a pedestrian crosswalk. The driver, 63-year-old Nafisa V. Sheriff of Marietta, was traveling southbound on South Cobb Drive. Zamarripa-Perez was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. A car turning onto Polk Street from North Marietta Parkway failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was broadsided by a school bus on its way to Marietta High School.
Fifteen people were injured when a school bus and a car collided at the intersection of Polk Street and North Marietta Parkway Friday morning. The accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. when a car (with a mom and her seventh-grade son) turning left onto Polk Street from the North Marietta Parkway “failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was broadsided by a school bus,” Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin said. The 12-year-old boy in the car was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite with life-threatening injuries, Baldwin said. A gray 2001 Toyota Tacoma was traveling on I-75 southbound at North Marietta Parkway Monday aftertoon, according to 11 Alive and Examiner. The truck went off the road, went down an embankment and struck a tree. The driver was critically injured from the impact and transported to Kennestone Hospital. It’s unclear if speed or alcohol played a role in the crash, the Examiner reports.
The GSP reports 10 traffic fatalities across the state during the Labor Day weekend, a drop since 2010.

At least 10 motorists were killed over the Labor Day Weekend, according to Georgia State Patrol. That number is down from last year, which saw 15 traffic fatalities. In 2010, 19 were reported. Fatalities were reported from Cobb County Police, Gwinnett County Police, Henry County Police, GSP Douglas, GSP Toccoa, GSP Valdosta, two from GSP Cartersville, and two from GSP Madison, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety website. Georgia State Patrol investigated a total of 373 traffic accidents, which resulted in 230 injuries. On top of the accidents, GSP arrested a total of 240 people for driving under the influence.
