Cobb Millage Rate Stays the Same

JoAnn Birrell was joined by Commissioner Bob Ott in opposition to the vote.

The two commissioners who voted against a property tax increase last year voted against maintaining the rate at 11.11 mills. “I couldn’t justify voting to keep it the same if I didn’t vote to raise it last year,” Commissioner JoAnn Birrell said, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. The Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 to keep Cobb County’s property taxes as is. Birrell was joined by Commissioner Bob Ott in opposition to the vote. Before the meeting District 2 Commissioner Bob Ott, who represents East Cobb and Smyrna-Vinings, told The Marietta Daily Journal he will vote against maintaining the same rate because it preserves last year's millage rate increase. The property tax rate will remain 7.72 mills for general fund, 3.06 mills for …

Tax Increase, TSPLOST Slammed at Chairman Forum

With primary elections almost a month away, incumbent Tim Lee's opponents continued their criticisms of 2011's hike in property taxes, as well as the proposed transportation tax.

The three Republican challengers vying for Cobb commission chairman continued to blast incumbent Tim Lee at a forum Tuesday for 2011’s property tax increase, and offered firm opposition to the proposed transportation tax. One of the three, financial consultant Mike Boyce, led the attack on the current administration in his opening comments, saying cuts should override tax increases as the solution to financial woes. “I’ve spoken to businessmen across the county, and anyone who runs a business or their family budget knows that if you have a 10 percent shortfall, you find a way to cut back your expenses,” he said. “I’ve spoken to no one in this county who says what you do is go out and borrow money and have a stimulus program or raise the …

I laughed like crazy when I read Tim Lee's comments about his wanting to "ensure that his community and Cobb County are taken care of" - what a joke! This is the same man who took care of deliberately and almost secretly closing down the Senior Day Care Center with VERY little notice. What a way to take care of those who most needed care. Lee preferred to pander to those who wanted a library …   more ›

Underage Alcohol Sales: What Stores and Communities Can Do

In this letter to the editor, Cathy Fink of the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce responds to Kroger's 60-day suspension.

The recently reported illegal sale of alcohol to minors is a recurring issue at some Cobb County Kroger locations. It is important for Cobb Commissioners to take these illegal sales seriously and issue sanctions that are effective at deterring future violations. It remains to be seen whether a 60-day suspension of Kroger's alcohol license at its Powder Springs Road store will result in sustained compliance Government and business practices proven to help prevent underage alcohol sales do exist and need to be utilized. Law enforcement use of compliance checks and government use of effective administrative sanctions have proven helpful. Business use of effective alcohol policies, hiring, training and management practices can also help. …

On the Agenda

Light Agenda on Tap for Commissioners

The commissioners meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the government complex, 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta.

The county commissioners will be meeting in the morning, and have a light agenda. They plan to take up several items including: ∗ The board will vote on changing the county code to clarify the difference between “for sale” condominiums and ones “for lease." The move would suspend the use of the “urban condominium” zoning until at least July, giving staff time to review other options, County Community Development Director Rob Hosack told the Marietta Daily Journal. There has been some concern about the time limit in which condominium builders are allowed to lease, instead of selling, units. ∗ The board is expected to vote to accept unspent money from the 1995-99 Home Investment Partnerships Act program originally given to Fulton County. …

Cobb to Welcome International Flights

Hiring a customs agent will keep McCollum competitive with area airports that already accept passengers from other countries, Commissioner Bob Ott said.

International flights will soon be able to land at Cobb County’s airport. The Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved an agreement with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection that will station a customs agent at Cobb County Airport-McCollum Field. “It’s really just to keep the airport competitive,” Commissioner Bob Ott said, noting that other area airports are already eligible for accepting international flights. The agent will cost $140,874 for the first year and $123,438 for succeeding years. The money will come from the airport’s two "fixed-based operators," or long-term tenants: Atlanta Northside Aviation and Preferred Jet Center. Ott, a member of the county’s Airport Advisory Board, emphasized that county money won’t be spent. He …
