The Cartersville science museum is your pick for a family-friendly place to spend time on a staycation.
It appears that when you want to get away without really going away, you go to Cartersville. In this week’s regional Readers’ Choice survey of staycation destinations, three of the top four vote-getters are Cartersville sites: Tellus Science Museum, Pine Mountain Recreation Area and Booth Western Art Museum. And even though six of the 19 poll options are in Cartersville Patch, commenters complained about a couple of the Cartersville sites we left off the list. So it’s only fitting that this week’s Readers’ Choice for favorite staycation destination is in Cartersville: the Tellus museum. Sweetwater Creek State Park in Douglasville Patch actually received the most votes, getting 27 percent. But we give equal weight to reviews and ratings of …

Due to county economic cutbacks, mowing medians and other areas has taken a backseat. The hiring of some part-time help will remedy the situation.
In the last few years Cobb County has tried to save money anywhere it could. Due to these budget constraints, available funding for contracted shoulder maintenance, median mowing and street sweeping services has been significantly reduced, according to Faye DiMassimo, director of transportation. The fiscal year budget for these services is $233,000, which represents a 78 percent decrease from 2009. Because of this, the intervals between mowing and maintenance have been significantly lengthened. In 2010, the services were re-assigned to road maintenance crews in-house. But it is too much for them to handle so the commissioners are being asked to approve 14 part-time, seasonal workers for the job. Salaries and equipment comes to $176,000. In…

A Paulding County judge has made it official: All of Cobb County will vote again on Sunday package sales of alcohol July 31. Superior Court Judge Arthur Fudger signed a consent order Monday between the county and plaintiffs who challenged the March 6 referendum in which residents of unincorporated voted to allow Sunday sales, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. The order was filed with the Cobb County Superior Court clerk's office Tuesday. Former state Rep. Roger Hines of Acworth made the challenge, arguing that the county was wrong to exclude residents of Cobb's six cities from the countywide vote. Fudger received the case because Cobb's Superior Court judges recused themselves. The county Board of Elections and Registration decided …

According to the 2012 report, released Tuesday, Georgia’s healthiest residents can be found in Fayette County, while Talbot County is the least healthy in the state. Identity theft is a major problem that often increases during tax season. With the April 17 deadline rapidly approaching, it is important to remain vigilant for attempts by criminals to obtain your personal information. A criminal who gets your name, Social Security number and other identifying information can file a fraudulent tax return in your name and collect the refund that should have gone to you. Often an unsuspecting victim won’t find out what happened until his own legitimate tax return is flagged for denial. It is important that taxpayers protect their personal information. If you think your personal information has been stolen and used for fraudulent tax purposes, contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-…
