Thirty-two officers graduated Friday from the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy, and 10 are from Cobb-area law enforcement agencies. Marietta Police Department Kennesaw Police Department Kennesaw State Police Department Cobb County Sheriff's Office The 10-week academy covered state laws, criminal procedures, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, search and seizure, and other law enforcement related subjects. Kennesaw's Steketee finished at the top of the class and was elected class president. Marietta's Van Ness was given the Marksmanship Award for scoring the highest overall average on the firing range.

Cobb County Sheriff's Office deputies Wednesday arrested a 28-year-old Marietta man who allegedly sped through a school zone and ignored deputies' requests to stop. Just after 9 a.m. Wednesday, a deputy saw a Toyota SUV driving in a reckless manner on Powder Springs Road, said Nancy Bodiford, the spokeswoman for the Cobb County Sheriff's Office. The driver, Ryan A. Sample of Marietta, ignored that deputy's request to stop and increased his speed, Bodiford said. That's when a second deputy started to pursue the SUV for approximately one-half mile. A little more than two weeks after a Cobb County deputy was arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a female inmate, a second deputy has been accused of the same thing. An internal investigation initiated after the Jan. 18 arrest of Alvin Blake Sutherland uncovered more alleged misconduct involving another deputy, according to WSB-TV. The investigation found that Sgt. Kristopher Travitz allegedly sexually assaulted a female inmate two years ago. He was recently arrested and booked in an area jail, where he remains without bond, according to WSB-TV. The Cobb County Sheriff's Office is being sued by a woman who says inadequate medical while in the jail led to her newborn baby's death. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Taylor Hogan delivered her baby in a bathroom in August 2010 while she was incarcerated on a charge of possession of stolen property. Her baby, whom she named Savante, died nine hours later. The newspaper reports that Hogan alleges in the lawsuit, which she filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, that she received inadequate medical care before and after her baby's birth. A jury in Atlanta's federal district court returned a guilty verdict late Thursday against Opeoluwa Adigun, age unknown, and Chukwuka Onyekaba, a/k/a Gabriel Onyekaba, 34, both of Marietta, on charges of stealing the identities of more than 85 individuals in the Atlanta area. According to United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates, between May 2006 and March 2010, Adigun and Onyekaba stole mail, credit cards, and other personal information from individuals in the Atlanta area, and then opened a variety of financial accounts under the victims’ names. As part of the scheme, Adigun obtained a job as a mail carrier in the Hiram Post Office under the name “Mary Afolabi,” an identity she had stolen from another person from Nigeria before she …
