City, County Officials Giving Back on Meals on Wheels Day

Members of the Cobb Board of Commissioners and local Mayors will deliver meals to senior citizens on selected routes on Meals on Wheels Day in Cobb County.

One of the ways that Cobb Senior Services is celebrating Older Americans Month is by declaring May 7, 2013, as Meals on Wheels Day in Cobb County. The County Manager, Members of the Board of Commissioners and local Mayors have agreed to honor the day by personally delivering meals to senior citizens on selected routes. Riding along with volunteers, the leaders in Cobb will be able to raise awareness of the plight of senior hunger in America and increase community support for the Meals on Wheels Program. Cobb Senior Services has provided hot, nutritious meals to seniors throughout Cobb County since 1972. Cobb Burning Ban Starts May 1

From May 1 through Sept. 30, you may not burn leaves, tree limbs or other yard waste, or use air curtain destructors for land clearing.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has issued a ban on open burning from May 1 to Sept. 30 of each year. Fifty-four counties in Georgia (including Cobb County) are affected. Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services is responsible for the enforcement of this state-issued burning ban in unincorporated Cobb County and the cities of Acworth, Kennesaw and Powder Springs. From May 1 through Sept. 30, you may not burn leaves, tree limbs or other yard waste, or use air curtain destructors for land clearing.

Cobb to Host Circle of Prayer [VIDEO]

More than 300 churches in Cobb County have been invited to join hands to pray Friday at Smyrna's Emory-Adventist Hospital.

Smyrna and Cobb County's faith community will join hands to form a "Circle of Prayer" Friday evening at Emory-Adventist Hospital in Smyrna. The event to rededicate the hospital will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, and members of more than 300 churches in Cobb County have been invited to participate. Last year, more than 250 worshippers held hands in a chain that wrapped around Emory-Adventist, Cobb County and Metro Atlanta’s only faith-based hospital. Visitors will have the ability to explore Cobb restaurants, hotels, attractions, shopping, special local events, meeting spaces, deals, and Cobb Travel & Tourism videos, photos and social media sites on the mobile site.

Cobb Travel & Tourism announced the development and launch of its new mobile website last week. Smartphone users will now be able to access and view travelcobb.org on their mobile phones in an "easy-to-use, simplified version" of the website. Visitors will have the ability to explore Cobb restaurants, hotels, attractions, shopping, special local events, meeting spaces, deals, and Cobb Travel & Tourism videos, photos and social media sites on the mobile site. New Left-Turn Signal at East-West Connector

Be prepared to see a new flashing yellow left-turn signal at the intersection of East-West Connector and Cooper Lake Road.

In the coming days, you will see a newly installed flashing yellow left-turn signal at the intersection of East-West Connector and Cooper Lake Road. The yellow arrow over the left-turn lane is part of a new signal display system that indicates to drivers more clearly when they must yield to make a left turn across traffic. Cobb officials say the new signal system has proven to help prevent crashes, move more traffic through an intersection and provide additional traffic management flexibility. According to a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) research, motorists understood more clearly when to yield before turning left when presented with the flashing yellow arrow as opposed to the traditional solid green light. Cobb to Welcome 31 New Firefighters

A swearing in ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. today.

After 30 weeks of training, Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services today will welcome 31 new firefighters. The agency will hold a swearing in ceremony for class No. 42 at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Wellness Center, 1150 Powder Springs St. NW, Ste. 100, Marietta. The ceremony will be the culmination of weeks of training in firefighting, emergency medical services, policy and procedures, and daily physical fitness.

Cobb Makes New Hire, Honors Volunteers

The county approved Tuesday to hire Willie A. Hopkins, Jr. as its new support services director, and tabled court officials' request of a grant to fund the county’s first mental health court.

The Cobb Board of Commissioners recognized volunteers and community leaders, and made a new hire to its management team Tuesday night. The board approved the appointment of Willie A. Hopkins, Jr., the assistant city manager of Pompano Beach, Florida and former director of general services for Fulton County, as Cobb's new support services director. The position manages a staff of 320 people in the area of property management, information services purchasing, and government service centers. Former director Virgil Moon retired last September to become the chief financial officer at Cobb and Douglas Public Health. Hopkins is expected to start in his new role on April 15, and receive a salary of $136,000, said Cobb County spokesman Robert …

Former director Virgil Moon retired last September to become the chief financial officer at Cobb and Douglas Public Health. The county is expected to hire Willie A.
