Recipe Corner: Snickerdoodle Cookies

These aren't your mother's snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodle cookies have always seemed a bit drab to me. Oh, they taste good, but seem to be missing something.  Being the chocoholic that I am (do you know why there is no chocoholic’s anonymous? No one wants to quit!) I began adding chocolate chips to my snickerdoodles. I liked the combination of cinnamon and chocolate.  But then one day I was in the baking aisle of a grocery store and found a new product by Hershey … cinnamon chips. They’re just like a chocolate chip, except they’re made from cinnamon. And when they are added to a chocolate chip snickerdoodle, the cookie is taken to a whole another level.  These cookies are the overall favorite crowd pleaser of all the cookies I make.  In fact, they are so good that they won not only …

Cookies for the Holidays: Peanut Butter Blossoms

This is a classic, and if you've never made them before, it's easy. We prefer dark chocolate Hershey Kisses – easier to justify as a "healthy" cookie.

Orange Finger Cookies

Brightening plates with a little bit of sunshine.

Oranges offer freshness without the tart bite that a lemon or lime might produce. Fat, cholesterol and sodium free, oranges offer vital nutrients that help maintain the body's immune system without a lot of effort. Used simply or in more complicated ways, oranges shine whether the corresponding flavors are in the forefront, like in orange peel tea, or in the background, in a pound cake or garnishing cream. Want to add a different spin to your salads? Orange juice works well as the basis for salad dressing and marinades, like in the miso marinade below. Because of its natural sugars, orange juice makes for a perfect candidate for reduced sweet sauces and glazes, or added to butter or cream cheese, with a little zest, for an added zing to …

German Chocolate Cookies

A surprisingly American treat.

Many people don’t know this, but German chocolate cake is an American creation. In 1952, General Foods distributed a recipe found in a Dallas, TX newspaper to boost sales of Baker’s Chocolate. In fact, the name is a tribute to 19th century chocolate maker Sam German (the cake was originally named German’s Chocolate Cake). The cake combines chocolate with coconut and pecans and is typically layered. However, cake isn’t always the best option when having a Fourth of July party. Therefore, I have devised a way to make German chocolate cake into a handheld treat…German…I mean German’s Chocolate Cookies. Ingredients             9 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup cocoa powder 1 baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1/3 …

Chocolate Drop Cookies

These are simply delicious, and fun treats for the whole family.

Living far away from my family, I cling to the happy memories of my childhood. Growing up in an Italian household, many meaningful moments were surrounded around food. More than the holiday meals, with which we call gathered in the dining room eating on the fancy dishes, the simple times spent in the kitchen meant the most.  With all the food that passed through our kitchen, desserts were a rarity. Luckily, every once in a while, I accompanied my mom to the local bakery where  I would eagerly peer into the display case, trying not to press my nose so hard as to leave an imprint. Bypassing the cakes, my eyes immediately went to the Cherry Marzipan Cookies, Molasses Crisps, Butter Almond Cookies, Amaretti Pinenut Cookies, and Sfogliatelle, a…
