A Healthy Recipe for the New Year

Jennifer Meister shares a rich black bean soup recipe.

We knew it would happen. It started with feasting at Thanksgiving followed by a month of eating and more eating as we toasted our way through Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year's Eve. So, here we are starting anew with fond holiday memories behind us and a serious craving for some veggies and a bean or two to start off the new year. Certified Holistic Health Counselor Jennifer Meister is serious about healthy eating and so much more. Just ask a regular at The Bar Method in Summit about Jen, where she's an instructor and you'll be met with an exhausting sigh about her no-nonsense vigorous teaching style. Before her gig at The Bar Method, she had her own yoga practice for seven years. All of these "teaching moments" led her even …

Recipe Corner: Snickerdoodle Cookies

These aren't your mother's snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodle cookies have always seemed a bit drab to me. Oh, they taste good, but seem to be missing something.  Being the chocoholic that I am (do you know why there is no chocoholic’s anonymous? No one wants to quit!) I began adding chocolate chips to my snickerdoodles. I liked the combination of cinnamon and chocolate.  But then one day I was in the baking aisle of a grocery store and found a new product by Hershey … cinnamon chips. They’re just like a chocolate chip, except they’re made from cinnamon. And when they are added to a chocolate chip snickerdoodle, the cookie is taken to a whole another level.  These cookies are the overall favorite crowd pleaser of all the cookies I make.  In fact, they are so good that they won not only …

Cookies for the Holidays: Peanut Butter Blossoms

This is a classic, and if you've never made them before, it's easy. We prefer dark chocolate Hershey Kisses – easier to justify as a "healthy" cookie.

Orange Finger Cookies

Brightening plates with a little bit of sunshine.

Oranges offer freshness without the tart bite that a lemon or lime might produce. Fat, cholesterol and sodium free, oranges offer vital nutrients that help maintain the body's immune system without a lot of effort. Used simply or in more complicated ways, oranges shine whether the corresponding flavors are in the forefront, like in orange peel tea, or in the background, in a pound cake or garnishing cream. Want to add a different spin to your salads? Orange juice works well as the basis for salad dressing and marinades, like in the miso marinade below. German Chocolate Cookies

A surprisingly American treat.

Many people don’t know this, but German chocolate cake is an American creation. In 1952, General Foods distributed a recipe found in a Dallas, TX newspaper to boost sales of Baker’s Chocolate. In fact, the name is a tribute to 19th century chocolate maker Sam German (the cake was originally named German’s Chocolate Cake). The cake combines chocolate with coconut and pecans and is typically layered. However, cake isn’t always the best option when having a Fourth of July party. Therefore, I have devised a way to make German chocolate cake into a handheld treat…German…I mean German’s Chocolate Cookies. Ingredients             9 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup cocoa powder 1 baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1/3 …
