More than 30 soccer games will take place Saturday as Custer Park officially opens in the City of Marietta. The new complex is being managed by the McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA. The park is located between Fairground Street and Cobb Parkway near the North Marietta Parkway. It has undergone a major renovation in recent months following the passage of a city bond issue. Marietta residents will have the opportunity to participate at a reduced rate in any of the programs operated by the YMCA at the facility. Custer Park, the city of Marietta's latest major project generated by the 2009 parks bond, is well underway and scheduled for completion in September. The park, which once included facilities for baseball, is being converted to a soccer complex. The new facility will include two full-size lighted soccer fields supported by parking and a concession/restroom building. The Metro Atlanta YMCA McCleskey/N.E. Cobb Branch will manage the park, and Marietta residents will have the opportunity to participate at a reduced rate in any of the programs operated by the YMCA at the facility. Marietta broke ground on $1.8 million in renovations to Custer Park on Monday. Upgrades will include: two new lighted soccer fields, a concession stand, restrooms, a playground and plaza and a parking lot. The improvements are funded by the $25 million parks referendum voters approved in 2009 and are expected to be completed late this summer, according to a release. Custer Park, at 600 Kenneth E. Marcus Way near Cobb Parkway and Fairground Street, is eight and a half acres.

While the YMCA began playing there Saturday, the building will not be open, and the playground needs to be installed yet. That will occur over the next two weeks. We will not have the official opening until that is done.   more ›
