Over 1000 books were placed in Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (MSGA) classrooms, as a result of a donation from the Ed Voyles Automotive Group honoring Marietta City Schools Superintendent, Emily Lembeck. The books for MSGA consist of six-pack sets of books that cover social studies and science standards while integrating reading and language arts instruction. Similar books were purchased for fifth grade to address teaching and learning social studies and science standards. Each fifth grade class across the district will receive these materials. Communities in Schools of Marietta/Cobb is the only Georgia organization to share in $10 million to help stem the high school dropout crisis. The contribution will provide a site coordinator in the 9th grade at Marietta and Osborne High Schools.

At a presentation event on Tuesday, Sept. 25, Communities in Schools of Marietta/Cobb County (CISMCC) was presented with a $200,000 AT&T Aspire contribution to support and extend CISMCC’s onsite coordinators. The AT&T Aspire contribution will provide a site coordinator in the 9th grade at both Marietta High School and Osborne High School. Overall, 24 percent of Marietta High School seniors demonstrated college-readiness in all four ACT benchmark scores.
Marietta City Schools' (MCS) composite score (21.0) on the 2012 ACT outperformed the state (20.7) and was under the national average (21.1) by 0.1 percentage point. Marietta High School (MHS) students outpaced the state in three of four areas tested with higher average scores in English (20.5), Mathematics (20.9) and Science (21.0). The 2012 ACT results reflect the performance of 181 MHS seniors, up from 173 last year. “Overall, 24 percent of MHS seniors demonstrated college-readiness in all four ACT benchmarks, up from 23 percent last year. Marietta City Schools fifth-graders meeting or exceeding standards outpaced state percentages on the 2012 Georgia Grade 5 Writing Assessment, for the fifth consecutive year. Of the 659 students tested, 84 percent met or exceeded the standard. The Board of Education of the City of Marietta has named Kristin Beaudin, the current Assistant Principal at Compton Elementary, Cobb County School District, as the new Principal at Hickory Hills Elementary. Beaudin assumes the post July 1. She replaces Diana Mills who is leaving the school district after seven years of service. As Associate Superintendent Hibbs will assist with all facets of Marietta school district management and supervise curriculum and instruction, operations, technology and assessment.
The Board of Education of the City of Marietta has named Dayton Hibbs, the current Assistant Superintendent for Operations, Technology and Assessment, as the new Associate Superintendent for Marietta City Schools. U.S. News & World Report named Marietta High School to its 2012 annual list of the best high schools. Of the 21,776 public high schools examined by U.S. News, the magazine named MHS a silver medal winner. The Marietta School Foundation Gala at the Strand Theatre featured performances by students and celebrated the schools and award recipients.
Students, faculty, family and friends, and community leaders were present at the Marietta Schools Foundation Awards Gala Thursday at the Strand Theatre. Performances included: Scholarships were presented to the following Marietta High School students: Admiral Jim Ellis received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. After graduating high school, Ellis attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, which he graduated in 1969 with a degree in aerospace engineering. Ellis completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech in 1970. He also earned a master’s degree in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida while in flight training in Pensacola. He was in the Navy …

The Marietta Board of Education is making changes at Sawyer Road Elementary. Debbie Burley, assistant principal at Sawyer Road, was named interim principal at the school. Burley replaces Jill Sims, who is the current principal and newly named director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction, K-12 Programs. Susan Graves, Title I Teacher/Coach, International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program Coordinator at Sawyer Road, was named interim assistant principal.
