Third F-35B for United Kingdom Makes First Flight

Monday, the third United Kingdom Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II sped down the runway at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base in Texas embarking on its first flight.

Monday, the third United Kingdom Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II sped down the runway at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base in Texas embarking on its first flight. The aircraft, known as ZM137, departed at 10:16 a.m. with Lockheed Martin F-35 Chief Test Pilot Alan Norman at the controls. ZM137 will complete a series of company and government checkout flights prior to its acceptance by the U.K. Ministry of Defence. ZM137 will join U.K. aircraft ZM135 and ZM136 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., later this year where it will be used for pilot and maintainer training. First International Student Pilot Flies F-35

The first international student aviator at the 33rd Fighter Wing, training to be an F-35B Lightning II instructor pilot, completed his first sortie in the joint strike fighter.

United Kingdom Royal Air Force Squadron Leader Frankie Buchler flew with Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron-501. "There were no surprises, the jet was fun to fly and the flight went as expected," said Buchler. "The ground school training package at the Academic Training Center with the flight simulators prepared me for smooth flying." March 21. Maj. Three F-35Bs Delivered to U.S. Marine Corps

The delivery of the first three operational-coded 5th generation F-35B STOVL fighters marks the beginning of STOVL tactical operational training at Air Station Yuma.

Three Lockheed Martin F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft were officially delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps during ceremonies at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., Nov. 20. The three jets are assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 residing with the host Marine Aircraft Group 13. “For more than 50 years, it has been our mission to support the Marine Corps mission, and we’re honored to deliver the first three F-35B STOVL aircraft to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121,” said Bob Stevens, Lockheed Martin chairman and chief executive officer. “The F-35B is the world’s only 5th generation, supersonic, stealthy combat aircraft that can also hover, take off and land virtually anywhere Marines are in action.  Through …

UK F-35, Marine Corps F-35B Delivered

A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B and United Kingdom Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II were delivered to Eglin Air Force Base Friday.

The second United Kingdom Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II took off from Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base on Oct. 19 for delivery to Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. Eglin's eleventh U.S. Marine Corps F-35B ferried to the Emerald Coast with the U.K. jet. The aircraft, known as ZM136 and BF-16, departed at approximately 8:06 a.m. CDT with U.K. Royal Air Force Sqn. Ldr. Jim Schofield and Marine Corps Maj. Adam Levine at the controls, respectively, for the 90-minute ferry flight to Eglin. ZM136 joins the first United Kingdom F-35B, which arrived at the base for operational test and evaluation in July. The F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing variants are the fifteenth and sixteenth F-35s to ferry to Eglin this year.

F-35 Test Team Completes First External Stores Testing

Over an Atlantic test range, Lockheed Martin test pilot Dan Levin flew the F-35B test aircraft BF-2 with external weapons pylons for the first time on Feb. 22. The test measured flying qualities with external pylons, inert AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and centerline 25 mm gun pod. Significant weapons testing for the F-35B and F-35C variants is scheduled for 2012, including fit checks, captive carriage, pit drop and aerial drop tests. The F-35B is the variant of the Joint Strike Fighter for the U.S. Marine Corps, capable of short take-offs and vertical landings for use on amphibious ships or expeditionary airfields to provide air power to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
