It's that time of year again. The 80th annual North Georgia State Fair will begin Thursday and run through Sunday, Sept. 30 at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. Attracting nearly 300,000 people in years past, the fair is the largest in metro Atlanta and the second largest in Georgia. With midway rides, shows, concerts, pageants, entertainment and food, there is something for everyone. The Georgia Lottery Concert Series for the fair begins at 8 p.m. under the covered area. A daring Civil War raid that began on Marietta Square 150 years ago will be brought back to life in theaters and by actors in Glover Park.
Larceny will be in the air around Marietta Square April 12 through 15 as theaters, museums and art galleries as well as actors in Glover Park take part in a commemoration of the Civil War’s “Great Locomotive Chase,” a mysterious, dangerous and quirky episode that took place 150 years ago. The four-day celebration will be this year’s main remembrance of the war’s 150th anniversary. “We are putting all our eggs in this basket,” said Theresa Jenkins, head of the Marietta Welcome Center and Visitors Bureau. “After all, (the chase) started here.” Highlights of the Civil War celebration in Marietta include: a showing of Disney’s The Great Locomotive Chase at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre, where the movie had its southern premiere in 1956; …

Expect over 30 local artists, craft makers and authors in addition to musical performances by The Emerson Drummers, The Hunger Valley Boys Blue Grass Band, Bert Reeves and others during the Cherokee Heights Arts Festival. The festival is Saturday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Etowah Drive between Freyer Drive and Seminole Drive. Sidewalk chalk, face paintings and exotic Nerdy Baby art education materials will be available all day for free kid fun. The Cherokee Heights Arts Festival started as a part of Marietta's 175th anniversary celebration in the spring of 2009. The event is sponsored by First Landmark Bank and Keep Marietta Beautiful.

Thousands of Cobb residents came to the Cobb Safety Village for a safe and educational trick-or-treating experience.
The 11th Annual Fall Festival of Fun on Saturday brought thousands of residents to the Cobb Safety Village. The three-hour event provided children a safe alternative to the traditional trick-or-treat in their neighborhood. The festival included arts and crafts, games, inflatable rides, police and fire prevention activities, costume and coloring contest, hayrides and a photo booth. Children and adults learned about general safety in areas such as driving, homes, germs, helmets, police and fire. The event was hosted by Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department along with Cobb County 4-H and the Cobb Safe Kids.

The 5K starts at 5 p.m. at Southern Polytechnic University and ends at Life University, the 1 mile graveyard scramble starts at 6 p.m. at Barclay Circle at Life University and the yellow brick road tot trot starts at 6:15 p.m. at Lyceum Park at Life University.
