Eighty-seven percent of students in the Cobb County School District met or surpassed standards in the winter 2013 state Eighth Grade Writing Test, according to a figures released by the district Monday. Cobb has the highest percentage of students of any school district in the metro Atlanta area reaching or surpassing the state benchmark, and it is one point above 2012 Cobb results. The metro figure is 86 percent, while across the state 82 percent of students reached or went beyond the standards. The Eighth Grade Writing Assessment is one of four level-specific writing tests administered by the Georgia Department of Education. Eleven Marietta City Schools students were named system winners of the 2011-2012 Young Georgia Authors Competition. “Congratulations to all the students competing in this year’s writing contest. The Marietta Center for Advanced Academics was designated as the first Georgia Department of Education Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) certified school Thursday. “It is so important that we begin teaching students about STEM-related careers at the elementary level so we can capture students’ imaginations and interests at a young age," said State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge in a press release. For the third consecutive year, Marietta High School has earned recognition as an Advanced Placement Honor School. The Georgia Department of Education named nine Marietta City schools 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools. The nine are among 824 Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools recognized by the state for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress at least three years in a row. “We are very proud to add Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta High School to the list of Title I Distinguished Schools this year,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, Marietta City Schools Superintendent, in a press release. “This is quite an achievement when you consider that the accountability bar has continued to rise each year making it increasingly more difficult for schools to achieve AYP.” Marietta City Schools 2011-2012 Title I Distinguished Schools:
