Jobless Rate Rises to 8.7% in Marietta

The Cobb County city's revised jobless rate for January was 8.4 percent.

Marietta's unemployment rate of 8.7 percent was slightly higher than the Metro Atlanta rate for February, but the jobless rate might prove to have been lower when figures are revised. The Georgia Department of Labor originally reported Marietta's unemployment rate at 8.7 percent for January, but revisions released today show it was actually 8.4 percent. That's three-tenths of a percent better than what was first reported. Out of the 31,990 members of the city's labor force, 2,784 of them were counted as unemployed. Marietta's unemployment rate a year ago was considerably worse, being recorded at 9.8 percent. Overall Cobb County's February unemployment rate was better than Marietta's, with 7.4 percent of the labor force considered jobless. …

Georgia’s Unemployment Rate Unchanged in January

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 8.7 percent, unchanged from December. The rate was 9.3 percent in January a year ago.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 8.7 percent, unchanged from December. T he rate was 9.3 percent in January a year ago. There was a loss of 47,700 mostly seasonal jobs and an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits over the month, but the increases were not enough to impact the unemployment rate. “The good news in this report is that we lost the fewest jobs for January since 1987,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “And, we start the year with 79,600 more jobs in January than we had in the same period a year ago.” The number of jobs increased to 3,956,300 from 3,876,700 in January 2012. Most of the over-the-year job growth came in …

I think I have applied for so many jobs at CarMax that my name probably just gets kicked out. Same thing with Cobb County. About 40 applications and no calls. I read an article where a company would not accept more than three applications from any one person. I think that's happening to me. It doesn't stop me, but I think that's what is happening.   more ›

Some Extended Unemployment Benefits End

That's because the state’s jobless rate has declined in the last three months.

Some recipients of federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) in Georgia will lose extended unemployment benefits, as of Saturday. EUC was established in 2008 to aid the long-term unemployed. Georgia will “trigger off” EUC’s Tier 4 unemployment insurance program during the week ending Jan. 12 because the state’s jobless rate has declined in the last three months, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Georgia’s jobless rate was 9.0 percent in September, but declined to 8.7 percent in October and 8.5 percent in November. Federal law mandates that a state in which EUC is provided must have a three-month seasonally adjusted unemployment average of 9.0 percent to remain “on” in …

Well, normally I would be encouraged by this, but for the first time in decades, the number of people who are still unemployed but not on any "list" is higher than normal. I am happy that it seems like fewer people are losing their jobs, though.   more ›
