Marietta's Jobless Rate Drops

That mirrors declines countywide and across metro Atlanta.

The August jobs report is out, and preliminary figures from the Georgia Department of Labor show a dip in Marietta's jobless rate. The city's unemployment rate dropped from 9.7 percent in July to 9.1 in August. That mirrors declines countywide and across metro Atlanta. Cobb's rate dipped from a revised 8.5 percent in July to 8.1 percent in August. And thanks to fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, administrative and support services, educational services, and health care and social assistance, the 28-county metro Atlanta area's jobless rate fell from a revised 9.2 percent in July to 8.9 percent in August, the Georgia Department of Labor said in a news release. The Georgia Department of Labor will help Norred & Associates, a security and investigative company, fill about 10 jobs for unarmed security officers in metro Atlanta Thursday, Sept. 6. The recruitment will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the GDOL’s Cobb-Cherokee Career Center, located at 465 Big Shanty Road in Marietta. While no previous security experience is necessary, applicants must have a resume, be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). They must also have their own transportation and be able to work flexible schedules, including days, nights, weekends and holidays. The Georgia Department of Labor will conduct two separate recruitments this week to help a McDonald’s restaurant and RGIS Inventory Service fill a number of jobs in Cobb County. The first event will be held Thursday, Aug. 30, at the McDonald’s restaurant, located at 4050 Jiles Rd. in Kennesaw. Two recruiting sessions will be held: one from 8 to 11 a.m. and the other from 2 to 4 p.m. The restaurant will be hiring workers to operate grills, take orders from customers, operate cash registers, prepare menu items, stock supplies, perform cleaning and janitorial services, and provide building maintenance. Marietta’s July Unemployment Rate Higher than Cobb County Average

Of the city’s 31,904-member labor force, 3,088 of the eligible workers were unemployed.

The Georgia Department of Labor released its local unemployment numbers earlier this week and while Marietta's rate was higher than that of Cobb County as a whole. County and city unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted. In July, Marietta’s unemployment rate was 9.7 percent. Of the city’s 31,904-member labor force, 3,088 of the eligible workers were unemployed. The labor force is comprised of the portion of a population that is 16 or older that resides in a particular city.  Smyrna's July unemployment rate was 9.3 percent and Kennesaw's was 10.3 percent. GDOL only supplies unemployment rates for city's with populations larger than 50,000 so there's no data available about Acworth and Austell's unemployment rates. Before seasonal …

One Fourth of Marietta Jobs Pay Big

Marietta holds 1.42 percent of all Georgia jobs and 18.1 percent of Cobb County jobs.

Marietta holds 1.42 percent of all jobs in Georgia and 18.10 percent of all jobs in Cobb County, according to a new study released by Georgia State University in Atlanta. Half of Marietta's jobs are mid-range, with 24 and 25 percent high-paying, "premium" and low-paying, respectively. Cobb County holds more than seven percent of all jobs in Georgia, with 31 percent of them being premium jobs. Not surprisingly, Fulton County has the highest percentage of jobs in Georgia, with 14.83 percent. Cobb County is in second place, with 7.19 percent. Chatham County is a distant third, containing 2.74 percent of state jobs. The study, released by the Fiscal Research Center of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, offers maps, tables, and …

Cobb Jobless Rate Below Metro Average

The seasonally adjusted rate for metro Atlanta for May was 8.9 percent, up slightly from April.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, metro Atlanta’s jobless rate rose to 8.6 percent in May from 8.5 percent the previous month, still lower than Georgia’s seasonally adjusted employment rate of 8.9 percent. GDOL attributed the increase to an influx of job seekers — 16,578 were added in May. Of those looking for work, 10,570 found jobs within a month. Cobb County’s unemployment rate for May was 8.1 percent. Marietta's Jobless Rate Falls to 9.2%

Unemployment across Cobb County dropped to 8.1 percent.

Marietta’s unemployment rate improved to 9.2 percent in March from 9.4 percent in February, 9.6 percent in January and 9.7 percent in March 2011, according to preliminary figures announced today by the Georgia Department of Labor. Meanwhile, Cobb County’s jobless rate fell to 8.1 percent in March from a revised 8.3 percent in February, 8.4 percent in January and 8.9 percent in March 2011. Those gains paralleled wider trends: The state and national rates are adjusted for seasonal factors; the regional and local rates are not. The state Labor Department attributed the Atlanta-area improvements to fewer layoffs in construction, manufacturing, trade, and administrative and support services.
