Three Marietta City Schools students are among the state winners of the 2013 Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition.
Three Marietta City Schools (MCS) students are among the state winners of the 2013 Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition. The fourth grade school system winner was James McPherson representing Hickory Hills Elementary (teacher Allison Elder); Valencia Ajeh from Lockheed Elementary (teacher Tanya Bradley) took fifth grade honors; and Ani Henderson from Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (teacher Nina Small) claimed the sixth grade win. The Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition is a themed contest open to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders throughout Georgia. Students write stories to compete for the best in each grade level at their school and winners progress to compete for best in the school system. The system winners move on the Georgia …

Three Marietta City schools are the recipients of one-year grants awarded by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). The grants to Dunleith, Hickory Hills and Sawyer Road Elementary are valued at over $91,000. “These Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grants are part of the USDA Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 (Farm Bill). Dunleith Elementary will receive $32,181, Hickory Hills Elementary will receive $22,872, and Sawyer Road Elementary will receive $36,035 from the grant,” said Cindy Culver, Marietta City Schools Director of School Nutrition. “Grant allocations are based on student enrollment at qualifying schools.” Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grants allow school systems to provide…

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta has named Kristin Beaudin, the current Assistant Principal at Compton Elementary, Cobb County School District, as the new Principal at Hickory Hills Elementary. Beaudin assumes the post July 1. She replaces Diana Mills who is leaving the school district after seven years of service. Hickory Hills Elementary and A.L. Burruss Elementary are among five Cobb schools that will receive grants from Kroger’s Atlanta Division as part of the“Earning Plus Learning” program. The annual contest invited schools across the Division to creatively demonstrate how they promoted the 2011-2012 theme, “Healthy Living,” within their communities. Hickory Hills Elementary will receive a $5,000 grant, and A.L. The Marietta School Foundation Gala at the Strand Theatre featured performances by students and celebrated the schools and award recipients.
Students, faculty, family and friends, and community leaders were present at the Marietta Schools Foundation Awards Gala Thursday at the Strand Theatre. Performances included: Scholarships were presented to the following Marietta High School students: Admiral Jim Ellis received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. After graduating high school, Ellis attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, which he graduated in 1969 with a degree in aerospace engineering. Ellis completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech in 1970. He also earned a master’s degree in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida while in flight training in Pensacola. He was in the Navy …

Marietta City Schools elementary grade students will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the fifteenth annual National Education Association's Read Across America Day, March 2. NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. “In the spirit of supporting the Marietta Reads! literacy initiative, we encourage adults in our community to read to a child in commemoration of Dr. Seuss's birthday,” said Dr. Debra McCracken, MCS Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, in a press release. The Georgia Department of Education named nine Marietta City schools 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools. The nine are among 824 Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools recognized by the state for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress at least three years in a row. “We are very proud to add Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta High School to the list of Title I Distinguished Schools this year,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, Marietta City Schools Superintendent, in a press release. “This is quite an achievement when you consider that the accountability bar has continued to rise each year making it increasingly more difficult for schools to achieve AYP.” Marietta City Schools 2011-2012 Title I Distinguished Schools:
