Oak Mountain High chose Marietta High assistant Cris Bell over more than 120 applicants for the job of head football coach, the Birmingham News reported today. Bell was set to meet students, parents and fans in Alabama today. The News has more from Bell, Oak Mountain AD David Hogue and Marietta head coach Scott Burton about Bell's move west for next season. Marietta High’s football team will have to find a new coach for linebackers and special teams. The American squad wins a close game over the National team, 33-28.
The American squad defeated the National squad, 33-28, in the fifth annual Cobb County Senior Bowl, played Saturday at McEachern High School. The American roster featured players from Allatoona, Lassiter, McEachern, Mount Paran Christian, North Cobb, Pope, South Cobb, Sprayberry, Wheeler and Whitefield. Players from Campbell, Harrison, Hillgrove, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, Marietta, Osborne, Pebblebrook and Walker made up the National squad. Basketball grabs the spotlight Friday night and Saturday, leading up to the highlight of the weekend, Walton's bid for the first Cobb County state football championship since 1967. Saturday's court action includes four games at Allatoona High in the Coaches vs. Cancer breast cancer awareness event. You also can catch wrestling and swimming this weekend, starting with 16 teams at the Creekview Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Marietta’s football revival came to an end for this season with a 48-7 loss to Camden County in the second round of the Georgia High School Association’s AAAAA playoffs. The host Wildcats (12-0) showed Marietta why they’re ranked sixth in the nation by USA Today. Camden County running back J.J. Green scored on a 63-yard run on the third play of the game, the Florida Times-Union reported, and the Wildcats quickly added a field goal and another touchdown after the defense forced a fumble and a Marietta punt. Marietta trailed 24-0 at halftime and 34-0 after three quarters. Marietta’s football team beat Cherokee, 27-6, Friday night to head into the state playoffs on a positive note and avoid a losing record for the regular season. After losing their showdown for the Region 5-AAAAA title last week against Walton, 42-14, the Blue Devils bounced back at home. They smothered the Warriors’ offense while being efficient on offense behind sophomore quarterback Jordan Mathis, filling in for injured starter Anthony Jennings, the Marietta Daily Journal reported. The game had no effect on Marietta’s seeding in the Georgia High School Association’s AAAAA playoffs but put the Blue Devils back on track after Walton ended their four-game winning streak.
