Join the Lassiter High School community this weekend to support an injured high school student.
This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the Christopher Heitzman Benefit 5K Run. The event takes place Saturday morning at Lassiter High School, with proceeds to help pay for medical expenses for the injured graduate. Heitzman, who graduated from Lassiter last spring, was seriously injured in a car accident last July on Trickum Road that killed his classmate, Ryan Aschenbach, and injured another recent Lassiter graduate Taylor Seaman. Heitzman sustained a head injury and several broken bones, and will need more surgeries. The fundraiser has collected just under $40,000 from pre-registration, and is hoping to raise more money to help cover Heitzman's medical expenses. A raffle, vendors, snacks and live …

Two Cobb County high schools have been told they will not be performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) in the fall because they lack racial diversity. The choruses at Lassiter and Walton high schools have been barred from full participation in the ASO's joint holiday concert held in December. Marietta rock band Almost Kings had a taste of the top of the music industry this weekend as the winners of the first Garage to Grammys Live contest. Formed in 2008 by Lassiter and Sprayberry alumni, the band talked to Marietta Patch about its music and goals before heading to Los Angeles for a live, streaming performance at the Grammy Awards expo. An independent rock band from Marietta has hit it big. Almost Kings was named the winner of the From Your Garage to Grammy Live contest, a fan-driven, month-long Facebook promotion that gave the band with the most votes an opportunity to play a live, online streaming performance during the Grammy awards expo in Los Angeles. Formed in 2008 and comprised of a group of friends and musicians from Lassiter and Sprayberry high schools, Almost Kings has gained a reputation as one of the hottest, most energetic and sought-after live acts touring the club, venue and festival circuit today, according to a news release. Schools, veterans and community organizations from across Cobb County came together to honor the men and women who have served our country on Friday.
Veterans Day is a national holiday honoring all veterans and commemorating those who have passed on. It is observed annually on Nov. 11, the day on which the Armistice ending World War I between the Allies and Germany was signed in 1918. The Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This year, Nov. 11, 2011, at 11 a.m., the City of Marietta honored the 93rd anniversary of the event with a parade and ceremony. The seventh annual Marietta Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony was hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta and the City of Marietta. The keynote speaker was the Honorable Michael J. Bowers, Maj. Gen.
