Community Spotlight: Mardi Gras 5K Run [VIDEO]

Want to celebrate Mardi Gras in Cobb County? Enjoy festive food, music and family fun at Saturday's Marietta Mardi Gras 5K Run.

This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the 4th Annual Marietta Mardi Gras 5K Run on the Marietta Square. The event benefits the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta and it's community partners. The 5K run will begin Saturday at 8 a.m., with the 1K beginning at 8:45 a.m. and the Tot-Trot at 9 a.m. For the third year, the Junior League is teaming up with Shoes for the Cure for a shoe drive. All shoe donations are welcome - not just running shoes. There will be bins for drop-off available. Cost is $30 for adults and $15 for Tot-Trot. Celebrate Mardi Gras with the 5K Run on Marietta Square, Atkins Park’s Oyster and Mardi Gras Festival in Smyrna, Henry’s Louisiana Grill Mardi Gras celebration in Acworth, a Masquerade Ball, or a Jazz Brunch Buffet in Kennesaw.

Mardi Gras is a week away, Tuesday, Feb. 12; however, Cobb County is kicking off the festivities early with a run on Marietta Square this weekend, a meet and eat for seniors on Thursday, and music and dining events leading up to Fat Tuesday. Strand Reopens Rooftop Bar for Fat Tuesday Celebration

Featuring live New Orleans jazz led by local musician Jacob Deaton, the rooftop of the Strand Theatre will be transformed into a New Orleans style speakeasy.

The Strand reopens its rooftop bar for a Fat Tuesday celebration you won’t want to miss. The long awaited re-opening of The Strand’s rooftop bar couldn’t come with a better way to celebrate than a Mardi Gras party. The party starts at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 and will continue until midnight. Featuring live New Orleans jazz led by local musician Jacob Deaton, the rooftop will be transformed into a New Orleans style speakeasy, a place to spend Fat Tuesday that offers drinks, beads and the best live music in town. Cover is $5 at the door. Space is limited to 200 people.

A book signing, martinis and music, 5K, tree planting, gala and more—Marietta has a variety of events you can enjoy this weekend.

Join dk Gallery Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. for a book signing of “Quarter-Peeled Oranges.” This book of poems written by Marietta neurologist Bruce Gillett is a tribute to his wife, Dale Gillett, who lost her 17 year battle with breast cancer. The book began as grief writing and evolved into a poetic love story. Quarter-Peeled Oranges includes illustrations by Bill Needs, a vocational rehabilitation counselor.
