Marietta Girls Ousted in First Round of State Tourney

Mill Creek hit 12 3-pointers to topple the second-seeded Blue Devils

The Marietta Lady Blue Devils owned the first and third quarters of Friday’s state tournament opener against Mill Creek. But it was what happened in the second and fourth quarters that ultimately determined the outcome of the game, which ended in a 61-46 defeat for Marietta. Mill Creek, playing the game without leading scorer Jasmine Carter, used a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter to take control of a game that Marietta led 40-39 with just under six minutes remaining. That was after the Hawks flipped a 13-9 first quarter deficit into a 29-19 halftime lead. The Hawks countered Marietta’s strong defensive efforts at the beginning of each half with a barrage of 3-pointers. In the first half, against Marietta’s zone defense, Mill Creek made …

Marietta Headed to State Tournament

Once again, Blue Devils get in with a losing record.

Last year, at 11-18, Marietta snuck into the state tournament with the worst record of any AAAAA team that qualified for the big dance. This year, the Blue Devils outdid themselves. Behind 19 points from senior Rob Greer, Marietta outlasted Woodstock 64-58 on Wednesday in the Region 5-AAAAA quarterfinals. The Blue Devils, who now sit at 10-16, are in the tournament for the second straight year. Marietta coach Matt Lyons isn't embarrassed by his team's record, "Record-wise, we're not where we want to be by any means," Lyons said after the game. "But I was joking with the kids in practice and I told them, 'I believe we're the best 9-16 [now 10-16] team in the state and I truly believe that. Our record really could be flipped around [16-9] …

Marietta Tops Lassiter, Advances to State Tournament

A 57-40 Region 5-AAAAA tournament win moves the Lady Blue Devils closer to a region title.

To say the Lassiter Trojans faced a tall task against second-seeded Marietta in the first round of the Region 5-AAAAA girls tournament at Etowah High School would be like saying the Beatles were famous–a huge understatement. Lassiter entered the game with just one win all season and had lost to Marietta 51-20 and 57-30 in the regular season. And the Trojans had to try to pull the upset without head coach Jon Christopher, serving a standard two-game suspension for being ejected in the next-to-last game of the regular season. Marietta won 57-40, but Lassiter, under assistant coach Rebecca Edgerton, didn’t go down without a fight. “I told the girls to leave it all on the court tonight,” Edgerton said. “Everything we’ve taught them, everything…

Marietta Splits Basketball Evening at Wheeler

Marietta girls win big; Marietta's boys lose

Marietta's girls and boys basketball teams played their final Region 5-AAAAA games for the 2010-2011 season on Friday at Wheeler High School. Marietta's Lady Blue Devils showed up at Wheeler with some offense. Led by Jasmine McSwain's 19 points and Courtney Sprague's 15 points, Marietta rolled to a 61-31 win over the Wheeler girls. Wheeler's Kiana Griffin and Tashalia Steede shared scoring honors for the Lady Wildcats with six points apiece. The Marietta boys played from behind for most of their game. The Blue Devils made a late run at Wheeler, cutting a 13-point Wildcat lead down to five with four minutes left to play. But the Wildcats went on a run of their own, putting the game away 91-79. Marietta's Rob Greer led all scorers with 28 …

Marietta Boys Fall to Lassiter Late

Lady Devils have little problem with Lassiter

Even though Marietta lost the first time it played Lassiter, the Blue Devils were convinced they were the better team. Maybe not. Marietta got down by 19 points in the second quarter, and despite a furious comeback, the Devils were unable to pull it out, losing 77-74. In the second quarter, Marietta didn’t look better than anyone. But the resilient Blue Devils hung around long enough to wait for Lassiter to cool off. And when the Trojans did, Marietta made the most of it, battling all the way back to take a fourth-quarter lead. But Marietta was unable to convert its last two times down the floor en route to the loss. “I think we missed another opportunity,” Marietta coach Matt Lyons said. “I don’t want to take anything away from Lassiter, …

Marietta Girls Outlast Wheeler; Boys Lose Tough One

Coach's daughter leads the way for the Blue Devils; Wheeler's boys just too strong for Marietta

There was a time when Marietta hosting Wheeler would have been as big as they come. The gym would be overflowing with talent, spectators and scouts. And no one would get shortchanged. As it turned out, Tuesday's game was a pretty good one, probably better than it should have been. Wheeler won 74-66 behind 21 points from both K.K. Simmons and Charles Mitchell. Marietta came in with a 5-10 record, playing a Wheeler team that hadn’t lost in the state of Georgia. Marietta tried to slow the ball down as much as possible, holding the ball for long periods of time, setting its offense and going almost to a stall game. But Wheeler’s good enough to win playing any style of basketball. And Marietta’s slowdown game meant it was going to have to hit …
