Bittner Is Marietta's Newest School Board Member

Brett C. Bittner came out victorious in Tuesday's election for the vacant Marietta School Board Ward 1 post, which was previously held by Logan Weber.

Brett C. Bittner claimed the Marietta School Board Ward 1 seat in Tuesday's election. Bittner ran unopposed for the post. First-term board member Logan Weber announced his resignation in March because he was moving to Nashville, TN, for a new job. Previously, Bittner served as an appointed member of Marietta’s Historic Board of Review as well as its Historic Preservation Commission, representing Ward 1, since 2010. Bittner will serve on the Marietta School Board until Dec. 31, 2013, the expiration of Weber’s term. Bittner received 245 votes, or 98.39 percent, in Tuesday's special election. Marietta City Schools BOE Sets Millage Rate

The overall millage rate is not increasing and City of Marietta taxpayers will see no change in their property tax from last year.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta will hold a special called meeting Tuesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. to set the school district millage rate (property tax rate) at 19.157 mills, a rate that maintains the current millage of 17.97 flat for the thirteenth consecutive year. The new millage includes a reclassified millage of 1.187 of School Bond Debt as part of the property tax rate effective Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13).  The overall millage rate is not increasing and City of Marietta taxpayers will see no change in their property tax from last year, according to Thomas Algarin, Director of Communication & Information at Marietta City Schools. Administration Changes at Sawyer Road Elementary

Sawyer Road Elementary will get a new principal and assistant principal and Marietta City Schools will have a new director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, K-12 Programs, on May 1.

The Marietta Board of Education is making changes at Sawyer Road Elementary. Debbie Burley, assistant principal at Sawyer Road, was named  interim principal at the school. Burley replaces Jill Sims, who is the current principal and newly named director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction, K-12 Programs. Susan Graves, Title I Teacher/Coach, International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program Coordinator at Sawyer Road, was named interim assistant principal. Graves, Burley and Simms officially assume their new posts May 1. “Debbie has worked closely over the past five years alongside Principal Jill Sims to foster student achievement within the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program at Sawyer Road,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, …

Cuts Made to MHS Auditorium

Changes were made to the proposed auditorium at Marietta High School in order to keep costs within the $9 million budget.

The number of seats in the proposed Marietta High School auditorium was cut to 750 and a skylight and orchestra pit were removed from the plans, bringing the estimated cost of the project to $8.9 million, The Marietta Daily Journal reports. In December, preliminary estimates showed the proposed 900-seat Marietta High School auditorium coming in over budget from between half a million to several million dollars. Marietta City Schools' plan was to build a multipurpose auditorium at Marietta High School for an estimated $9 million. The Marietta Board of Education agreed on Aug. 16 to use a $7 million general-obligation bond to pay for the new auditorium. Teacher, Students Honored at Meeting

Mika Sterling worked tirelessly so that Marietta school buses could accommodate an additional 500 to 600 students at the start of the school year.

The Marietta City Schools student of the month, teacher of the month and 2011 Georgia School Bus Safety Poster contest winners were honored at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday. Fallon Robinson, a fifth grader at AL Burruss Elementary was named student of the month for October. Robinson has had straight A's since she joined the school in second grade. She is an avid reader, a member of Burruss Beavers in Harmony, on the reading bowl and math bowl teams and studies gymnastics. Robinson also spends her time helping others. She donates clothes and collects pop tabs for Ronaold McDonald House. She was presented with an award certificate and given a gift certificate to the Marietta Pizza Company.
