The Marietta Police Department's Firearm Safety Seminar is designed for civilians and will cover a variety of topics including: safety, laws and alternative weapon usage.
The Marietta Police Department’s Training Unit will host a Firearm Safety Seminar on Thursday, Feb. 28. This seminar is designed for civilians and will cover a variety of topics including: safety, laws and alternative weapon usage. The seminar is free of charge. “This program has been developed to educate the citizens on current firearm laws and weapon safety. We want to equip citizens with the knowledge and skills so they feel confident owning and handling a firearm or weapon if they choose to do so,” said Sergeant Jake King of the Marietta Police Training Unit. City Manager Bill Bruton honored retirees, employees who have served Marietta for a combined total of 1,801 years and employees of the year at a City Hall ceremony on Dec. 7. Twenty-one employees who have served the city for a combined total of 516 years and five months retired in 2012. The city of Marietta has been awarded federal grant funds to construct a pedestrian/bicycle trail, and citizen input is being sought for the project's design. A design workshop will take place Aug. 30 from 4-6 p.m. in the City Council chamber located on the lobby level of City Hall, 205 Lawrence St. The proposed work will link to a future multi-use trail along Powder Springs Street, improve Brown Park and link to the Kennesaw Mountain to Chattahoochee River (KMCR) trail. The KMCR trail will include a bridge over South Marietta Parkway, will connect downtown Marietta with Brown Park, and connect to Smyrna's trail system and the Silver Comet trail. The city of Marietta completed infrastructure upgrades at City Hall, the police and fire departments and municipal court buildings, which is expected to save about $90,000 annually in energy, operations and maintenance costs. Trane, a global provider of indoor comfort systems and solutions, provided high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions combined with energy-saving advanced system controls for the upgrades. City leaders expect the infrastructure upgrades to save $71,000 in annual energy costs and reduce annual maintenance costs by $19,000. Looking for something new to do in Marietta? Keep Marietta Beautiful has a way to have family fun, see the sites of Marietta and spend time outside—geocaching. On the scavenger hunt, use your global positioning system-equipped smart phone or device to search for 10 geocaches in the city's parks and historical sites. All hidden caches are outside and can be searched for at any time. Collect cards from all the hidden locations and present them for a prize bag weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Marietta City Hall or weekends at The Historic Marietta Trolley Co. Sites include: Remember to cache in and trash out on every hunt. Bring a trash bag along with you on your searches, and pick up the occasional piece of trash you see.
