Marietta High School (MHS) recently earned approval from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the new International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate (IBCC). On Saturday, May 25 at 2 p.m., join Marietta Reads! and Lynne Yates of the Georgia Equine Rescue League (GERL) for a free workshop about horse rescue. Marietta Reads! recently completed its ninth annual Read-A-Thon fundraising program for Marietta City Schools (MCS) elementary and Sixth Grade Academy students. This year’s Read-A-Thon started March 22, 2013 and ended April 15, 2013. Students collected donations based on the amount of reading they did – elementary students had a target of 500 minutes while sixth grade students set a goal of 500 pages. This year, total Read-A-Thon pledges earned exceeded $8,000, with 21 students earning over $100 in pledges, and 3 students earning over $500 in pledges. Three Marietta City Schools (MCS) students are among the state winners of the 2013 Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition. The fourth grade school system winner was James McPherson representing Hickory Hills Elementary (teacher Allison Elder); Valencia Ajeh from Lockheed Elementary (teacher Tanya Bradley) took fifth grade honors; and Ani Henderson from Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (teacher Nina Small) claimed the sixth grade win. The Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition is a themed contest open to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders throughout Georgia. Marietta City and Cobb County Schools fared well in the College and Career Ready Performance Index, which replaces Adequate Yearly Progress reports.
The first test of Georgia's alternative to No Child Left Behind has yielded fairly good marks for both the Cobb County School District and Marietta City Schools. According to the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), students at the elementary, middle and high school levels of both public school systems outpaced the state average on a wide-ranging accountability spectrum. The index grades each school in the state on a 100-point scale, measuring achievement (70 points) and tracking progress points (15 points) and achievement gap points (15 points). Cobb schools averaged a score of 85.4 at the elementary school level, 87.1 for middle schools and 86.3 for high schools. In Marietta, the elementary school average score was 86.6 …
