Marietta Salutes Fallen Firefighter

Lonnie Nutt is the first Marietta firefighter to die in the line of duty, Chief Jackie Gibbs said.

Marietta firefighter Lonnie Nutt was as humble as they come. And while those who knew him said he never missed an opportunity to help somebody, he never expected anything in return. He worked silently and never sought the spotlight. But Tuesday called for a celebration of life for the Kennesaw man who died of a massive heart attack Thursday while responding to an automobile accident on Whitlock Avenue. As Marietta Fire Cmdr. Merv McDonald said midway through his colleague's funeral at Roswell Street Baptist Church, Nutt, the first Marietta firefighter to die in the line of duty, is "getting the attention that he deserves today." That was evident nearly two hours before the start of the 11 a.m. service when members of the Patriot Guard …

Tipster in Marietta Mosque Arson Case Awarded $3,500

Tamsir Mendy set fire to the Masjid Al-Hedaya (Islamic Center of Marietta) in July 2010. In January 2012, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years.

The Georgia Arson Control Program has awarded $3,500 to a tipster who provided information that assisted in the arrest and conviction of the person who set fire to a Marietta mosque in 2010. Marietta Fire officials investigating the July 5, 2010, fire at 968 Powder Springs St., obtained information from this witness, helping them locate and interview a mosque member, who confessed to the arson. Tamsir Mendy, 27, originally from Gambia and most recently a Powder Springs resident, set fire to the Masjid Al-Hedaya (Islamic Center of Marietta). In January, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years, 10 of it in prison. The burned mosque had split off from another congregation. Both groups were worshipping on adjacent properties, but there…

Spring Ahead This Sunday

The Marietta Fire Department reminds residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms when changing their clocks this weekend.

It's that time again. This Sunday clocks are set ahead one hour at 2 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3 a.m. local daylight time. The Marietta Fire Department reminds residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms when changing their clocks this weekend. Smoke alarms are the only device in the home that will let you know there is a fire, Marietta Fire Lieutenant Tim Cameron said. "A properly working smoke alarm could provide enough early warning to allow for a successful escape." It's a good idea to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms twice a year when you change your clocks, Cameron said. "Alarms that are powered by electricity should also have their batteries …

Infrastructure Improvements to Save Marietta $90,000 Annually

The project reduces the city's carbon footprint by about 490 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year, the equivalent emissions savings from planting 12,000 new trees.

The city of Marietta completed infrastructure upgrades at City Hall, the police and fire departments and municipal court buildings, which is expected to save about $90,000 annually in energy, operations and maintenance costs. Trane, a global provider of indoor comfort systems and solutions, provided high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions combined with energy-saving advanced system controls for the upgrades. City leaders expect the infrastructure upgrades to save $71,000 in annual energy costs and reduce annual maintenance costs by $19,000. The $560,000 in HVAC infrastructure upgrades were funded through an energy efficiency and conservation block grant (EECBG) provided by the U.S. Department of Energy …

Phony Firemen Solicit Donations

The Marietta Fire Department won't go door-to-door seeking charitable contributions.

Beware of people in civilian clothes claiming to be fire officials. Two men pretending to be Marietta Fire Department employees reportedly solicited money Friday in East Marietta for a nonexistent charity, Marietta Public Safety said in a news release. The Marietta Police and Fire departments are searching for the culprits, described as heavy-set white men who appeared to be 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall and between 55 and 60 years old. Employees at a business in East Gate Shopping Center, at the intersection of South Marietta Parkway and Lower Roswell Road, said the two men arrived about 11:45 a.m. The men said they were collecting donations for a charity that benefits firefighters and their families. One of the men had a gold Fire …
