More than 30 soccer games will take place Saturday as Custer Park officially opens in the City of Marietta. The new complex is being managed by the McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA. The park is located between Fairground Street and Cobb Parkway near the North Marietta Parkway. It has undergone a major renovation in recent months following the passage of a city bond issue. Marietta residents will have the opportunity to participate at a reduced rate in any of the programs operated by the YMCA at the facility. After a major renovation to Hickory Hills Park, the city of Marietta celebrated its official reopening with a party for the neighborhood and ribbon cutting on Friday. The city purchased the Hickory Hills Park property in September 2006 from the Marietta City School system. The city paid $400,000 and donated the former fire station on Polk Street. In November 2009, voters approved a $25 million parks bond, of which $1.75 million was used to create the new 10.6-acre Hickory Hills Park. The park broke ground on changes August 2011. The park consists of two tennis courts, a playground, two youth soccer fields, a multi-purpose field, one-half mile walking track, three picnic shelters, a parking lot with space for 137 vehicles and restrooms. …

Cobb kids spent a day traveling from station to station and getting their "tickets" punched, earning prizes and learning about the role of trains in local, regional and national history.
The theme Saturday at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park was "Trains, Trains and More Trains!" Kids from Marietta and the surrounding area came out to enjoy a day exploring trains with musicians, model trains, and dress-up, craft and photo stations. "Junior Ranger Day was Amazing," Benita Duling, director of Educational Activities at the park, said of the event. "We had so many kids and families attend; the Visitor Center was overrun with people."
