Marietta Police to Give Free Child ID Kits to Parents

The Child ID Kits contain inkless fingerprinting capabilities, a DNA swab, a place for a current photo and an area to include information about your child.

The Marietta Police Department has invested in a program to help protect children.   On Saturday, May 18, 2013 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Marietta Police Officers will be on hand in the lobby of the Marietta Police Department to hand out free Child ID Kits.  The officers will assist parents on how to complete the kits and will fingerprint their children if desired.  The Child ID Kits contain inkless fingerprinting capabilities, a DNA swab, a place for a current photo and an area to include information about your child.  Completed kits will stay with the families and not the police department. This is important because if a family moves or goes on vacation and they become separated from their children, they will have these completed kits …

7 Marietta Businesses Sell to Minors

Take a look at the Marietta businesses that passed the alcohol compliance check and the businesses cited for selling to minors on April 26.

The Marietta Police Department conducted an alcohol compliance check on April 26. Forty-five businesses were checked. Seven sold alcoholic beverages to the department's underage buyers. The buyers did not provide false identification or misrepresent their age in any way. It is the responsibility of the seller to check ID, and refuse sell to underage persons. Man Killed in Whitlock Avenue Wreck

A Jeep traveling at a high rate of speed east on Whitlock Avenue left the roadway, overturned and hit a tree, killing the driver instantly.

Marietta Police are investigating a single vehicle fatality accident on Whitlock Avenue at Winn Street that occurred at 1:42 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8. Initial on scene investigation reveals that a 2001 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Whitlock Avenue at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control causing his vehicle to leave the roadway, overturn and strike a tree, killing the driver instantly. The driver's name is being withheld pending family notification. There were no other injuries or vehicles involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Geoff Culpepper at (770)794-5357.

Marietta Man Missing Since February

Marietta Police are investigating the disappearance of a 20-year-old Marietta man who was last seen in February.

The Marietta Police Department is investigating the disappearance of Stephen Newsome, 20, of Marietta.  Newsome, an Arts of Cobb volunteer, was last seen leaving his apartment on Franklin Road on Feb. 10. He was reportedly on his way to see someone about purchasing a motorcycle, according to a press release from the Marietta Police Department.  Newsome has not made contact with friends, family or co-workers since. Newsome is described as a light skin black male, 5’6” and 140lbs, according to Police. No foul play is suspected at this time. Anyone with information about the disappearance of Stephen Newsome is asked to contact Detective Shane Merritt at 770-794-5324.

'Numerous' Computers Taken in Cobb Child Porn Operation

"No physical arrests have made at this time," Officer Mike Bowman with the Cobb County Police Department said this evening. "Charges may be forthcoming pending the completion of the computer analysis."

The Cobb County Police Department today seized "numerous" computers as part of a multi-agency operation that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman called the "largest of its kind in Georgia." During a three-month investigation that began in January, the GBI and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force identified 98 suspects who distributed child porn over the Internet, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said this afternoon. Those were the targets of today's operation, known as Operation Guarding Innocence. As of 6:30 p.m., there have been 73 search warrants executed and 41 arrests made in connection with the operation, Bankhead said. Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident on South Marietta Parkway

A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident on South Marietta Parkway Wednesday morning.

Joseph Gathambyri, 25, of Marietta was riding a bicycle on South Marietta Parkway westbound when he was struck and killed from behind by a vehicle that then fled the scene, according to Marietta Police. Through evidence studied on the scene and a tip to the Marietta Police Department investigators located a black 1994 Toyota Truck at a west Marietta residence believed to be involved in the incident. Further investigation into this vehicle lead to the location and arrest of the driver, Damon Thomas Lautch, 27. Lautch is being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on charges of hit and run, DUI and 1st degree vehicular homicide. 3 in Custody After Milo's Bar Shooting

"All three suspects are pending transport to the Cobb County Jail where they will be processed and booked," Cobb Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nancy Bodiford said. "They have no bond."

The alleged shooter wanted in connection with Sunday afternoon's murder inside Milo’s Bar and Grill surrendered to Cobb authorities earlier today, and two other suspects were apprehended this afternoon at an East Cobb apartment complex, the spokeswoman for the Cobb County Sheriff's Office said. At 3:30 p.m. today, the Cobb County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit arrested 36-year-old Trina Lesley Chatman and 48-year-old Joseph Ricky Hampton at the Bentley Manor Apartments, Cobb Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nancy Bodiford said in a news release. Man Killed in Marietta Bar Shooting

A Sandy Springs resident was found shot on Sunday in the parking lot of Milo's Bar on Garrison Road. He was taken to Kennestone Hospital for emergency surgery but died later that morning.

The Marietta Police Department is investigating a murder that occurred inside Milo’s Bar, located at 188 Garrison Road.  At around 3 a.m. on Sunday, April 7, Marietta Police responded to a "person shot" call at the location. Upon arrival, officers discovered 34-year-old Sandy Springs resident Takilam Terrell in a parking lot, Marietta Detective Christopher Lindsey said in a press release.  Terrell was the victim of a gunshot wound. Terrell was transported to Kennestone Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, according to the release. Terrell succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital later that morning. Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident in Marietta

A 55-year-old male was riding a bicycle on Powder Springs Street near Natchez Trace when he was struck by what witnesses describe as a black SUV.

The Marietta Police Department Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.) is investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident. The accident occurred at 7:43 p.m. on March 31 on Powder Springs Street, according to Marietta Police. A 55-year-old male was riding a bicycle on Powder Springs Street near Natchez Trace when he was struck by what witnesses describe as a black SUV, Police said. The driver of the vehicle was last seen northbound on Powder Springs Street towards downtown Marietta. The bicycle rider was transported to Kennestone Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Cobb Parkway, Roswell Street Reopened After Gas Leak

One southbound lane of Cobb Parkway and all eastbound lanes of Roswell Street from Key Drive to Cobb Parkway were shut down Monday because of a gas leak.

The gas leak was repaired shortly before 7:30 p.m. All lanes of Cobb Parkway and Roswell Street are now open. All North and Southbound lanes of Cobb Parkway at Roswell Street are open. The right-turn lane from Eastbound Roswell Street to Southbound Cobb Parkway is still closed. Marietta Fire Department and Atlanta Gas Light crews are on the scene of a gas main break at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Roswell Street. One southbound lane of Cobb Parkway is shut down as well as all eastbound lanes of Roswell Street from Key Drive to Cobb Parkway.
