Three Marietta City Schools students are among the state winners of the 2013 Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition.
Three Marietta City Schools (MCS) students are among the state winners of the 2013 Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition. The fourth grade school system winner was James McPherson representing Hickory Hills Elementary (teacher Allison Elder); Valencia Ajeh from Lockheed Elementary (teacher Tanya Bradley) took fifth grade honors; and Ani Henderson from Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (teacher Nina Small) claimed the sixth grade win. The Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition is a themed contest open to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders throughout Georgia. Eleven Marietta City Schools (MCS) students are among the system winners of the 2012-2013 Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition. The purpose of the Young Georgia Authors (YGA) writing competition is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, to provide a context to celebrate their writing successes, and to recognize student achievement in arts and academics. “Each year we look forward to naming the student winners of the annual Young Georgia Authors writing contest. The Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (MSGA) was recently named a Georgia Lighthouse School to Watch as part of a recognition program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. MSGA is one of only 17 other Georgia Schools to receive this honor since the program’s inception in 2002. MSGA will be honored at the Georgia Middle School Association annual conference in Savannah Feb. 25-26, 2013. Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (MSGA) Assistant Principal, Catherine Kacyvenski, is the recipient of the Georgia Association of Middle School Principals (GAMSP) District 14 – Georgia Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year Award. Over 1000 books were placed in Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (MSGA) classrooms, as a result of a donation from the Ed Voyles Automotive Group honoring Marietta City Schools Superintendent, Emily Lembeck. The books for MSGA consist of six-pack sets of books that cover social studies and science standards while integrating reading and language arts instruction. Similar books were purchased for fifth grade to address teaching and learning social studies and science standards. Each fifth grade class across the district will receive these materials. Karen Brogan, a magnet teacher at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (MSGA), recently earned “Master Teacher” certification from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. At the Sept. 18 regular meeting of the Board of Education of the City of Marietta, the Marietta Schools Foundation (MSF) recognized Karen Brogan and presented her with a $2,500 check for her accomplishment. Brogan has worked at MSGA for nine years and has over 15 years of teaching experience. “She exemplifies the art of inspiring students to excel, and we recognize her dedication and commitment to teaching,” MSF President, Maddox Kilgore said. The MCS Transportation Department hosts their annual "Kindergarten Kruise" Tuesday, Aug. 7 for elementary students and their parents.
Marietta City Schools classes begin at all schools district-wide Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012. Pre-registration dates/times, pre-opening and open house activities dates/times vary district-wide. The MCS Transportation Department hosts their annual "Kindergarten Kruise" Tuesday, Aug. 7 for elementary students (regular and special education routes) and their parents. Buses run during regularly scheduled route times, and any elementary student, regardless of grade, can ride the bus with their parent. The Marietta School Foundation Gala at the Strand Theatre featured performances by students and celebrated the schools and award recipients.
Students, faculty, family and friends, and community leaders were present at the Marietta Schools Foundation Awards Gala Thursday at the Strand Theatre. Performances included: Scholarships were presented to the following Marietta High School students: Admiral Jim Ellis received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. After graduating high school, Ellis attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, which he graduated in 1969 with a degree in aerospace engineering. Ellis completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech in 1970. He also earned a master’s degree in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida while in flight training in Pensacola. He was in the Navy …
