Marietta Teacher Celebrates History, Music on Stage

Marietta Middle School teacher Kayce Grogan-Wallace stars in her fifth production at the Strand Theatre.

Kayce Grogan-Wallace, a native of Marietta and theater teacher at Marietta Middle School, starred in the Atlanta Lyric Theatre's production of Ain't Misbehavin' "It's one of the best musical reviews of all time," Grogan-Wallace said. "It's a great expression of the music of the late '20s." Ain't Misbehavin' is Grogan-Wallace's fifth show with the Atlanta Lyric Theatre. "It's an amazing experience," Grogan-Wallace said. "The Lyric always has great concepts, great visions, and the production always turns out wonderful." Celebrate Dr. Seuss and Read

Friday is Read Across America Day, and Marietta City Schools are celebrating with an array of activities. Check it out and tell us what your favorite book is!

Marietta City Schools elementary grade students will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the fifteenth annual National Education Association's Read Across America Day, March 2. NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. “In the spirit of supporting the Marietta Reads! literacy initiative, we encourage adults in our community to read to a child in commemoration of Dr. Seuss's birthday,” said Dr. Debra McCracken, MCS Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, in a press release. Woman Believes in Her Students

Shayla Jones, the site coordinator at the Marietta Performance Learning Center, helps students at the non-traditional high school.

"All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them." The Magic Johnson quote is featured in the handbook for the Marietta Performance Learning Center, or MPLC, a small, non-traditional Marietta High School program geared towards students who are not succeeding in the traditional school setting. The motto could be used to describe the way Shayla Jones, the MPLC's site coordinator, operates. "She believes in the kids even when they don't believe in themselves," said Tammie Roach, principal at the MPLC. "Ms. Jones is a natural educator. Marietta Schools Annual Spelling Bee

Each year students from each MCS elementary school, the Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and the Marietta Middle School compete for an opportunity to represent the school district at the Georgia Association of Educators District 2 spelling competition.

   Marietta City Schools hosts its annual Spelling Bee, Friday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. at the MCS Administrative Offices located at 250 Howard St. The Marietta Education Association will once again sponsor the event. “Students competing in the annual Spelling Bee are very often our top readers, and research shows that a child that is an avid reader and writer typically has stronger spelling skills,” said Dr. Debra McCracken, Assistant Superintendent Curriculum & Instruction, in a press release. Nine Marietta City Schools Earn Distinction

The Marietta schools were recognized for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress at least three years in a row.

The Georgia Department of Education named nine Marietta City schools 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools. The nine are among 824 Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools recognized by the state for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress at least three years in a row. “We are very proud to add Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta High School to the list of Title I Distinguished Schools this year,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, Marietta City Schools Superintendent, in a press release. “This is quite an achievement when you consider that the accountability bar has continued to rise each year making it increasingly more difficult for schools to achieve AYP.” Marietta City Schools 2011-2012 Title I Distinguished Schools:

Make a Choice with Marietta City Schools

Marietta City Schools are entering the fifth year of the Choice Academies program, which provides parents and guardians an opportunity to choose the elementary school best suited to their child’s talents and needs.

The open application period for the Marietta City Schools elementary Choice Academies program for 2012-2013 is Nov. 7 through Jan. 20. Choice provides parents and guardians an opportunity to choose the elementary school best suited to their child’s talents and needs. Science Teachers Receive Awards

Four Marietta City Schools secondary science teachers are the recent recipients of Performance Incentive Awards valued at $4,000.

Thomas Monti (Marietta Middle School), Julie Schunck (Marietta Sixth Grade Academy), Celis Hartley-Lewis (Marietta High School) and Stephanie Howard (Marietta High School) are scheduled presenters at state superintendent John Barge’s 2011 Race to the Top Summit. The four Marietta City Schools secondary science teachers are the recent recipients of Performance Incentive Awards valued at $4,000. The summit is being held Monday and Tuesday at the University of Georgia Conference Center in Athens. The awards were presented by Marietta City Schools superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck at the Aug. 16 Board of Education meeting. Marietta Sixth Grade Gets Solar Energy System

Students will be able to monitor the solar panels through the internet and learn the principles of solar energy.

The Marietta Sixth Grade Academy is the recipient of a 5,000-watt solar energy system. The installation is the result of a joint effort between Marietta City Schools, Marietta Power and Water and Electric Cities of Georgia. Under the Renewable Energy Grant Program, Electric Cities of Georgia received $460,000 of economic stimulus money for solar system projects and awarded a portion of the grant money to Marietta Power and Water for the installation of one of the solar systems.
