Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors in Marietta, Smyrna, Austell, Mableton and Powder Springs. If you have some time to volunteer as a MoW driver, or if you belong to an organization or business that would like to “Adopt-A-Route,” call Volunteer Services at 770-528-5381. Meals on Wheels brings homebound, frail seniors a hot meal on a daily basis. Each day, Cobb Senior Services prepares over 250 meals to be delivered to senior adults in Cobb County. by Joseph Pond One year ago this week I was given a Notice of Violation by the Cobb County Code Enforcement for having a dozen hens in my backyard. In Cobb County, you must have at least two acres of land to own poultry; I have only a half-acre. The neighbor that lives behind me in a different neighborhood was looking over my six foot privacy fence and saw my enclosed chicken coop and hens. She had unsubstantiated fears that the poultry would ruin her property value and notified her County Commissioner. In the year since, I have worked hard to change the 40-year-old law that essentially bans poultry in Cobb County. I researched the topic, compiled statistics and presented this to the Board of Commissioners. The Board unanimously rejected …

Perfect Game’s 14u WWBA National Championship kicked off Monday in Marietta. This tournament is just the beginning of a series of tournaments. The first 14u WWBA National Championship took place in 2007. Since then 32 alumni of the event have been drafted, including Kaleb Cowart (2010, Angels, First Round) a native of Adel. The East Cobb Astros 14u have dominated at the championships, winning all but one championship in the history of the event. The Dulin Dodgers are the only team that has been able to wrestle the championship away from the Astros. The Dodgers took the championship in 2009. “The event has grown from 20-some teams to 80-some teams," Coach Dave Roberts of the East Cobb Astros 14u said. "We’ve been fortunate to win it every …

Eric Hurd (Woodstock) and Jeff Larimer (Marietta) reached the Men's Double Canoe (C-2) Final Sunday, where they finished 9th. Hurd and Larimer finished tops among U.S. C-2 boats with a time of 115.40, +7.11 seconds behind the gold medalists. It will be the first Olympic Games for both paddlers. Casey Eichfeld (Drums, Pa.) and Devin McEwan (Salisbury, Conn.) placed 13th. The Georgia canoe team of Jeff Larimer, of Marietta, and Eric Hurd, of Woodstock, leads in Olympic selection points after winning the previous two selection races.
The 2012 Olympians for Men's Canoe, Men's Kayak, Women's Kayak and Men's Double Canoe will be named by Sunday. In Men's Double Canoe, the Georgia tandem of Jeff Larimer, of Marietta, and Eric Hurd, of Woodstock, leads in Olympic selection points after winning the previous two selection races, the 2012 Pan American Championships and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Casey Eichfeld and Devin McEwan, of Salisbury, Conn., finished second in both races. Two suspects were arrested in a theft crime spree that involved 10 victims at the Marietta amusement park.
Amanda Young, 27, of Marietta and Xavier Ransom, 18, of Marietta were arrested in a theft crime spree that involved 10 victims over a three-day period at the Six Flags White Water amusement park. Both suspects were stealing valuables from unattended bags at the theme park while the victims were on rides, according to Marietta Police. Detectives were able to track some purchases made with stolen credit cards to the Walmart on Trade Center Parkway. With help from Walmart Loss Prevention, detectives were able to identify one of the suspects and later identify the second. Around $2,700 worth of stolen property was returned back to the victims.
