Marietta Schools Celebrate Awards, Scholarships, Music, Dance

The Marietta School Foundation Gala at the Strand Theatre featured performances by students and celebrated the schools and award recipients.

Students, faculty, family and friends, and community leaders were present at the Marietta Schools Foundation Awards Gala Thursday at the Strand Theatre. Performances included: Scholarships were presented to the following Marietta High School students: Admiral Jim Ellis received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. After graduating high school, Ellis attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, which he graduated in 1969 with a degree in aerospace engineering. Ellis completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech in 1970. He also earned a master’s degree in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida while in flight training in Pensacola. He was in the Navy …

Celebrate Dr. Seuss and Read

Friday is Read Across America Day, and Marietta City Schools are celebrating with an array of activities. Check it out and tell us what your favorite book is!

Marietta City Schools elementary grade students will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the fifteenth annual National Education Association's Read Across America Day, March 2. NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. “In the spirit of supporting the Marietta Reads! literacy initiative, we encourage adults in our community to read to a child in commemoration of Dr. Seuss's birthday,” said Dr. Debra McCracken, MCS Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, in a press release. Nine Marietta City Schools Earn Distinction

The Marietta schools were recognized for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress at least three years in a row.

The Georgia Department of Education named nine Marietta City schools 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools. The nine are among 824 Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools recognized by the state for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress at least three years in a row. “We are very proud to add Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta High School to the list of Title I Distinguished Schools this year,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, Marietta City Schools Superintendent, in a press release. “This is quite an achievement when you consider that the accountability bar has continued to rise each year making it increasingly more difficult for schools to achieve AYP.” Marietta City Schools 2011-2012 Title I Distinguished Schools:

Mentor Marietta Youth

Marietta High School students serve as mentors to students from Park Street and Lockheed Elementary schools and help them with homework, study skills and tips on how to be a leader.

By City of Marietta The public is invited to mentor Marietta's youth and help them develop the skills to become future leaders in the community. If you are interested in serving as a Marietta YELLS leadership coach, complete the application and email it to LauraTKeefe@gmail.com.  Marietta High School students serve as mentors (Bigs) to students from Park Street and Lockheed Elementary schools (Littles) and help them with homework, study skills and tips on how to be a leader. The city is looking for adults to coach the high school students and help them implement service projects as they mentor the younger kids. I Am Power, Water Smart

Marietta honors elementary school poster contest winners Wednesday.

At Wednesday's meeting, the Marietta City Council honored several students from Park Street Elementary School for winning a poster contest as part of Public Power and Clean Water week. The theme for the public power contest was "I am power smart," and the theme for the clean water contest was "I am water smart." Public Power Contest winners include: Clean Water Contest winners include: This is the 25th anniversary of Public Power Week, a cross-country program to explain the importance of public power to local citizens as well as state and national officials.
