The Strand Theatre Celebrates Second Birthday
The weekend marks the second anniversary of the Earl Smith Strand Theatre's return as an actual theater after more than three decades.
The phrase "It takes a village" usually applies to the philosophy behind raising a population of growing children; however, when it comes to The Strand Theatre at Marietta Square the more appropriate phrasing is "it takes a community," referencing its reopening after more than three long decades of closure. The Earl Smith Strand Theatre, simply known as The Strand, opened its doors Sept. 24 1935, with Mariettans enjoying movies on the big screen until the late 1950s. “Former patrons have told me stories of when their parents would use the theatre as a daycare," said Christy Rosell, director of marketing for The Strand.
