Ron Newcomb, the new president of Chattahoochee Technical College, was introduced to and welcomed by members of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce at a reception Thursday evening in Marietta. The reception held at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre was the fifth of several set in each of the six counties served by the school. The last reception will be held in Canton in June. Attendees at the event included state legislators, and community and business leaders around Cobb County. Building a strong workforce for communities in Georgia is Chatt Tech's No. 1 priority, Newcomb told Patch in February, after he was named the college's new president. Credits earned at Chattahoochee Technical College are going farther than ever with a new agreement between the Technical College System of Georgia and the University System of Georgia. An additional 17 classes have been added to the list of courses that now transfer to local area colleges and universities bringing the total across the system to 27. In response to Gov. Nathan Deal’s call for more Georgians to complete college, TCSG and the Board of Regents began to look at opportunities for such an agreement On November 11, 2011, the regents approved a plan in the form of a report, “Complete College Georgia,” that commits the University System’s 35 institutions to increase college completion. Chattahoochee Technical College welcomed high school counselors, business leaders and community members to the third stop on the Go Build Georgia regional tour Monday evening. The tour, which kicked off Feb. 7, was designed to inform educators and business about the skills gap that has created a critical shortage of qualified candidates for the skilled trades. Ron Newcomb was officially announced Thursday as the new president of Chattahoochee Technical College. The announcement was made by Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson after his choice was approved by the state board. “I look forward to continuing my work with the faculty, staff and students of Chattahoochee Technical College in this role,” Newcomb said in a news release Thursday. “We have a long and proud history in this state as leaders in higher education. Marietta teacher of the year Joanna Cox chose a Chrysler Town and Country for the one-year car lease she received.
The Cobb Chamber of Commerce held its monthly marquee event, the First Monday Breakfast this week to honor the teachers of the year for Cobb and Marietta, as well as hold a panel on higher education with some of the top minds in the field. Sponsored by the Center for Family Resources and held at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest, the hall was filled with both Cobb Chamber supporters and those involved in higher education. The event first took time to honor teachers of the year in both Cobb and Marietta City Schools. Chattahoochee Technical College is about to lose the man who made it into the largest technical college in Georgia. Sanford Chandler, who has been the Marietta-based college’s president since November 2008 and oversaw the merger of Chattahoochee, North Metro and Appalachian technical colleges into a single eight-campus entity serving six counties in 2009, is leaving Oct. 1 to become the Technical College System of Georgia’s assistant commissioner for global initiatives. “I’m excited about this new opportunity but would be remiss if I didn’t comment on what an extraordinary two years it has been merging three great technical colleges,” Chandler said in a statement released by the college Thursday afternoon.
