Celebrate Mardi Gras with the 5K Run on Marietta Square, Atkins Park’s Oyster and Mardi Gras Festival in Smyrna, Henry’s Louisiana Grill Mardi Gras celebration in Acworth, a Masquerade Ball, or a Jazz Brunch Buffet in Kennesaw.
Mardi Gras is a week away, Tuesday, Feb. 12; however, Cobb County is kicking off the festivities early with a run on Marietta Square this weekend, a meet and eat for seniors on Thursday, and music and dining events leading up to Fat Tuesday. This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the 10th Annual Gobble Jog by MUST Ministries. The road race on Thanksgiving morning raises money to fight poverty. This year’s theme, “It’s kind of a big deal,” heralds the Nov. 22 event that will hopefully attract 10,000 runners, building on last year’s 9,453 attendees. Proceeds from the race help MUST Ministries provide 34,000 individuals each year with food, shelter, education and employment opportunities, clothing and access to healthcare to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness and foster long-term change. The Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk to fight colon cancer will return to Metro Atlanta for the third consecutive year. Smyrna resident and colon cancer survivor Dawn Gagliardi is among the hundreds of participants who will be running in their underwear to help raise awareness for the disease this weekend in Marietta. In 2002, Gagliardi was constantly plagued with an upset stomach, discomfort, bloating and extreme pain. She was told that she had Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The IBS treatments, however, did not work for her even after countless visits to the doctor's office. After her visit to a gastroenterologist and receiving a colonoscopy, she was immediately diagnosed with stage II colon cancer at just 31 years old. Along her journey fighting the disease…
