Students, faculty and alumni of Life and Southern Polytechnic State universities, residents, and business and property owners are invited to work with design professionals to identify ways to make the area near Cobb Parkway and South Marietta Parkway a better place to live, work, play and learn. Participants will "roll up their sleeves" to help draft location-specific plans for new trails, transportation improvements, new destinations, and connections between the Life and SPSU campuses and adjoining areas. The purpose of the study is to develop a redevelopment plan for Cobb Parkway and South Marietta Parkway, increase visibility of Life and Southern Polytechnic State universities and help to connect the universities with the surrounding …

In addition to bringing art to Marietta Square, the Artists Market helps fund the Branding Project, which is working to brand and promote Historic Downtown Marietta.
The Marietta Artists Market, which launched last year, is expanding. The market will be held the second and fourth Saturday of each month from April through November. With room for 40 booths on Mill Street the event brings together a variety of quality art including jewelry, pottery, sculptures, glass work, felting, paintings, photography and more. "We try to keep the art at a fine art level," Donna Krueger, owner of dk Gallery and president of The Branding Project, which sponsors the event, said. A bill sponsored by state Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, and passed by the Georgia Senate on a 34-19 vote would bar illegal immigrants from the state's higher-education offerings at universities, colleges and tech schools. Senate Bill 458, which now will go to the House for consideration, would require post-secondary-school applicants to submit documents verifying their citizenship, according to a Senate press release. The Georgia Engineering Alliance has, for the second consecutive year, selected Southern Polytechnic State University students to receive two prestigious awards to be presented during its 2012 Georgia Engineers Week Awards Gala on Feb. 25. No other institution in recent history has been honored with both of these student awards, according to a press release. Garrett Bailey, a senior majoring in mechatronics engineering, is the state’s Engineering Student of the Year. Southern Polytechnic State University has added a fifth school to its academic structure this week by elevating the home of its engineering programs from Division of Engineering to School of Engineering. Nearly one in five SPSU students major in engineering, close to 1,100 students who generate more than 20 percent of the credit hours at the institution, according to a news release. Dr. Thomas R. 1. The Haunted Hustle is an event for all ages. The 5K starts at 5 p.m. at Southern Polytechnic University and ends at Life University, the 1 mile graveyard scramble starts at 6 p.m. at Barclay Circle at Life University and the yellow brick road tot trot starts at 6:15 p.m. at Lyceum Park at Life University. Events include a showing of the movie "Hocus Pocus" in Life's Standard Process Amphitheater, children's games and activities, a costume contest, haunted village, photo booth, refreshments and a graveyard ghouls BBQ. Students were challenged to develop business solutions to pressing local and state issues to illustrate social business in action.
A team of graduate and undergraduate students from Southern Polytechnic State University won first place this week in a business plan competition at the Georgia Social Business and Microcredit Forum, which involved 37 teams from 36 colleges and universities state-wide. The forum’s keynote speaker was Dr. Muhammad Yunus, winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the microcredit concept, who presented the top award to SPSU for having developed a plan for a workable business to address a critical social issue. The new chancellor of the University System of Georgia Henry “Hank” M. Huckaby will visit the Southern Polytechnic State University campus for the first time Thursday. The chancellor will meet with faculty and staff at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom and, after making a few brief remarks, will take questions from the audience. Architecture, mechanical engineering technology and computer science are the most popular majors at SPSU this fall.
Although the numbers aren’t official yet, Southern Polytechnic State University’s student enrollment is now at 5,781, which includes 1,243 new undergraduate students, according to a press release. The number of SPSU students who identify themselves as non-Caucasian increased to 45.3 percent this fall from 44.3 percent last fall, according to the Office of Institutional Research. Hispanic student enrollment has grown by 8 percent over the last year, and the number of black students is up 10 percent.
