Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, a vehicle struck a power pole and caused lines to fall into the roadway.
If the stretch of South Cobb Drive from Cobb Parkway to Fairground Street is part of your morning commute, plan an alternative route. It is closed for the next 12 to 14 hours after a traffic crash in the area, said Officer Mike Bowman, the spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department. Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, a vehicle struck a power pole and caused lines to fall into the roadway. "The pole is broken and in order for them to repair the pole, repair the wires and restore the power, it's going to take 12 to 14 hours," he said. It "will cut into rush hour traffic in the morning." A 63-year-old Marietta man was traveling southbound on South Cobb Drive in a Jeep Cherokee, and a 55-year-old Smyrna man was attempting to cross South Cobb Drive.

A pedestrian was hit on South Cobb Drive and later pronounced dead Sunday night, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Authorities say Jose Luis Zamarripa-Perez of Smyrna, 55, was attempting to cross South Cobb Drive near the intersection of Waldrep Circle at about 7:45 p.m. when he was struck by a black 1990 Jeep Cherokee. Preliminary investigation suggests that Zamarripa-Perez was walking westbound and not at a pedestrian crosswalk. The driver, 63-year-old Nafisa V. Sheriff of Marietta, was traveling southbound on South Cobb Drive. Zamarripa-Perez was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. If you are a business owner in Marietta near Dobbins, a new program could help reduce your state taxes. Businesses in the Military Zone are eligible to receive $3,500 in state income tax credits for every new job created in 2011 and 2012 (minimum of two full-time, permanent jobs of at least 35 hours per week) for five years. The qualifying area is east of Atlanta Road, west of Cobb Parkway, south of Roswell Street and north of South Cobb Drive. Marietta is the first city in Cobb County and one of the first in Georgia to receive Military Zone designation. You know, if people would just use crosswalks, most of these people would still be alive. I was driving down South Cobb Drive between Concord Road and Church Rd/St. on Saturday, at about 7:30 pm, and a woman was trying to cross the road in between two traffic lights.
