Marietta Firefighter Honored for Service to City, U.S.

Marietta City and Cobb County officials and representatives from Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets celebrated the opening of a 41,403-square foot grocery-only store at 1137 Powder Springs Road on Jan. 16.

Approximately 90 employees have been hired to operate the store, one of the first Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in Georgia. The store is strategically located within one of Marietta’s opportunity zones, which encourage new businesses to locate in the city or existing businesses to expand. When two or more new jobs to the state of Georgia are created, businesses may be eligible to receive $3,500 in state income tax credits for each new job for five years. Talenti Gelato Plant, 100 Jobs Coming to Marietta

Talenti plans to maintain its existing plant in Dallas but relocate its primary production headquarters to the Marietta Industrial Park and begin production later this year.

Talenti Gelato has acquired a former Kroger ice cream production facility in Marietta. The expansion represents the addition of up to 100 jobs in Marietta and the state of Georgia. Cobb County Superior Court judge Adele Grubbs administered the oath of office to new Ward 4 City Councilman Andy Morris on Aug. 6 at City Hall.

Cobb County Superior Court judge Adele Grubbs administered the oath of office to new Ward 4 City Councilman Andy Morris on Aug. 6 at City Hall.  Voters elected Morris to fill the unexpired term of Van Pearlberg, who resigned to pursue another elected office. Morris will serve through 2013. Seven committees of Marietta City Council discuss new initiatives and legislation before deciding whether to forward issues to the full Council for consideration and possible action. Marietta Participates in National Recycling Challenge

Marietta is competing for a $100,000 grant in a nationwide challenge that launches a local recycling rewards program.

Americans recycle only one-and-a-half pounds of the more than four pounds of waste they generate daily, adding unnecessary waste to our nation’s landfills. In an effort to help slow this trend and inspire waste reduction efforts, Marietta is participating in the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge, a nationwide contest that aims to increase household recycling participation in 50 communities across the United States. The community with the highest reported recycling participation will receive a $100,000 grant from SC Johnson to put toward a local sustainability project. Grand Opening: Marietta Gets a New Movie Theater

Take a look at the grand opening of Marietta's 10-screen NCG theater and see what other developments are planned or underway in the Powder Springs Road corridor.

City leaders and representatives from the Neighborhood Cinema Group (NCG) celebrated June 21 the opening of a multi-million dollar, 10-screen NCG theater at 1050 Powder Springs St. The theater, which includes stadium seating, 3-D and surround-sound technology, is the only cinema in the city. It is expected to create 40 to 50 regular part-time jobs and several full-time management positions. Marietta Movie Theater Opens Friday

It will be the only movie theater, besides the Strand, which occasionally shows movies, within the city limits.

A new 10-screen, state-of-the-art, movie theater is opening Friday in Marietta. The theater, at 1050 Powder Springs St., includes stadium seating, 3D, and surround sound technology. Neighborhood Cinema Group’s theater is in the former Regal Cinemas building and is part of many major developments to take place in the Powder Springs Street redevelopment corridor. "We are encouraged by the fabulous demographics and the improvements already made in the area, said Jeff Geiger, president of NCG in December. "Our new cinema will be a draw for the entire area and offer the nicest movie experience you will find anywhere in the nation.” NCG, which announced its plans in December 2011, will be the only cinema in the city limits besides the Strand, …

Marietta Honors Battle of Midway Survivor

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, the city has named June 4, 2012, Tess and George Gay Day in Marietta. Gay piloted a torpedo plane and was shot down, wounded and survived 30 hours at sea during the battle.

Mayor Steve Tumlin honored the memory of U.S. Navy Reserve lieutenant George Gay, his squadron's sole survivor of the Battle of Midway, and his wife, naming June 4, 2012, Tess and George Gay Day in Marietta in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the battle. Gay, a longtime Marietta resident, played a significant role in the Battle of Midway, which was the turning point in the Pacific Theatre. He piloted one of the 30 torpedo planes launched from the USS Hornet, without protection and, along with his squadron, attacked the Japanese carrier fleet, according to a city news release. Gay was shot down, wounded and survived 30 hours at sea during the battle. He was the sole survivor from his squadron, according to the release. He received …

Citizens Graduate Marietta Police Academy

Graduates learned about police operations, saw demonstrations, participated in hands-on training and learned about the challenges police officers face on streets through role-playing scenarios.

Twenty-three people learned first-hand about the Marietta Police Department's operations during the Marietta Citizens Police Academy, a free 10-week course designed to familiarize residents and business owners with city policing. Graduates learned about department’s operation, saw demonstrations, participated in hands-on training given by officers and learned challenges police officers face on streets through role-playing scenarios. Mayor Steve Tumlin, Police Chief Dan Flynn and officer Don Smith recognized graduates of the most recent Citizens Police Academy on May 9.
